The Square Bang adds a whole new dimension to the Tourbillon
Why are watches round? Because their most basic component– the wheel – is round. It’s as simple as that. Perhaps too simple for Hublot, though, who was certainlynot going to build the future of Haute Horlogerie on conventions from the past.
In 2022, the Nyon-based Manufacture unveiled a brand-new collection, its third, andlatest addition to the Big Bang family, made up of different shaped watches: the round Big Bang, the tonneau-shaped Spirit of Big Bang, and the Square Bang. Square. Powerful. Radical. The essence of the Big Bang encapsulated in a square case with each side measuring 42mm, now available in some twenty variations, all Manufacture chronograph pieces. Until now.
The Square Bang Tourbillon 4-Day Power Reserve is the first Square Bang with two central hands. It also features many other firsts. The first to offer a 3D carbon case. The first to be regulated by a Tourbillon.
The first to contain only square bridges.
To achieve this result, Hublot made full use of the capacities of its in-house Manufacture. The MHUB6023 manual movement was especially developed for the Square Bang Tourbillon. The timepiece is the perfect fusion of form and function, technique and design. Each of the bridges are square or rectangular, bearing the 174 components essential to this calibre. Every surface also features a subtle combination of matte and satin finishes to beautifully accentuate the different depths at which the various bridges are set.
“Until now, advances in square watches have been rather timid, usually confined to the case alone. With the Square Bang Tourbillon 4-Day Power Reserve, we wanted to take the exercise to its logical conclusion, by designing a movement whose architecture is also fully right-angled. The bridges are straight, clean and sharp, as if to protect a movement that always beats to the rhythm of a perfect circle, that of the Tourbillon, barrel and power reserve. The fusion is complete,” explains Julien Tornare, CEO of Hublot.
UNCOMPROMISINGLY SQUARE
To reinforce the square geometry, the main components of the timepiece are distributed over the four sides of the square: winding on the right, power reserve on the left, large barrel on top and tourbillon below. The balance is perfect, and nothing escapes the discerning eye since the entire movement is
skeletonised. Powerful yet ethereal, the openwork composition leaves its angles and straight lines suspended in mid-air. The complex architecture is ingenious, with technical and aesthetic meetings in perfect fusion to create a mechanism whose lightness is equalled only by its uniqueness, as the first
watch composition of its kind developed by Hublot.
To celebrate the arrival of the first Tourbillon in the Square Bang family, Hublot has designed a bespoke case for it, made entirely from carbon and measuring 42mm. The first in the collection, its 3D finish is created using a carbon composite, woven into vertical and horizontal lines. The structure is built around a square motif, in keeping with the spirit of the Square Bang. The same inspiration is found on the rubber strap, which is also textured with square motifs, ensuring continuity between the different elements of the watch exterior and, above all, guaranteeing the perfect harmony of the piece.
The new Square Bang Tourbillon offers an extended power reserve of four days, with the indicator at nine o’clock counting down the remaining days and hours. To ensure that each of these is measured with optimum precision, its tourbillon is fitted with a silicon escapement that makes it resistant to the
magnetic disturbances and temperature variations of everyday life.

The MB&F SP One, initially dubbed “Three Circles”, showcases a trinity of floating elements – the barrel, balance wheel, and dial – defying gravity on your wrist. These components appear to hover mysteriously at the centre of an amphitheatre, all visible through invisible sapphire domes, with the balance wheel performing a mid-air dance and the tilted dial highlighting MB&F’s clever conical gearing. The SP One is a mechanical marvel that turns your wrist into a stage for a captivating, gravity-defying performance.
Encased in a 38mm pebble-like shell, the SP One melds a smooth, tactile feel with a bezel-free design and delicately detached lugs. As MB&F’s slimmest and smallest watch, it nonetheless remains true to the brand’s signature three-dimensional architecture and boundary-pushing spirit. Somewhere between MB&F’s radical Horological Machines and more classic Legacy Machines, the SP One inaugurates a new, undefinable “Special Projects” collection.
To truly grasp the amphitheatre-like drama and unconventional flair of this project, let’s dig into its origin story.
Plunging the hand in the basket
When COVID hit, like many others MB&F thought it was the end. In this tumultuous time, the team decided it was important to dive into a basket of fun, dormant projects that had been on the back burner for years. The M.A.D.1 was one example of these whimsical ventures: initially planned to be a playful experiment to thank friends and family, it turned out to be the runaway success we know today. The following years were tinged with more success, marked by new releases, a collection of prestigious GPHG awards… Times were great.
But as MB&F owner and creative director Maximilian Büsser says, success can be toxic – leading to complacency, treating clients poorly, and stifling innovation. Instead of succumbing to these pitfalls, the team ramped up their creativity and plunged their hands deeper in the basket of dormant projects.
This surprising turn of events underscored a timeless truth for the brand: the unexpected can indeed work wonders. It was a bold reminder that the best business plans are the ones you never planned at all. This embodies the spirit of MB&F, which according to any management book, epitomizes doing everything wrong. No business plan, just a will to create the unexpected, going against the grain and revelling in the unconventional.
The basket brimming with special projects sketched over the years, seemingly senseless at the time, was full of wild ideas, flashes of intuition, and even sketches of skateboards and razors. It was a treasure trove of creativity. Max reached into the basket and picked out one project that best embodied the spirit of these special ventures.
This project, simply code-named Special Project One (SP One), was the chosen one.
Nothing classic about a classic
“We asked ourselves: what if we did what no one expected – an elegant, classical watch?” remembers Max. This was a risky move, much like the brand’s first Legacy Machine, or the M.A.D.1, or many other MB&F projects: zero market expectations, 100% risks.
“As creators, pride drives us. Pride doesn’t come from the easy path but from risking it all and potentially facing a huge setback”. The first sketch of the SP One, dating back to 2018, proves this ethos. Like all MB&F projects, it started with a sketch – quickly or “badly” drawn, as Max likes to say – but the essence of the design and specificity of the project were already there. Three circles resembling a smiley face hinted at the playful yet intricate journey ahead. The concept stemmed from this idea of a trinity: the barrel, the balance wheel, and the dial suspended in the case itself levitating on the wrist.
Yet, these early sketches were all about crafting a watch that whispered sophistication instead of shouting for attention. It needed to be subtly elegant, with a classic flair that set it apart from the usual MB&F boldness while keeping the brand’s roots alive. In other words, a hard-to-reach equilibrium.
This initial sketch was then refined and reworked with the help of famous watch designer and longtime MB&F Friend Eric Giroud. After numerous iterations, the concept seemed just right: it was then time for the engineers to take over, sketching and mapping the entire project with precision, care and plenty of head-scratching.
Levitating in a circle
Initially code-named “Three Circles,” the SP One movement is crafted around the three key elements of any mechanical watch: the barrel, the balance wheel, and the dial. Each component isn’t just there for show; they’re meant to feel like they’re floating in mid-air.
Thanks to the sapphire glass on both the front and back, these elements appear to defy gravity. However, it’s the thoughtful architecture of the movement that truly enhances this captivating levitation effect, creating a striking visual experience. Embracing the “less is more” mantra, the bridges are almost like magic, practically invisible. Most components are cleverly hidden beneath the three key elements, letting their beauty take centre stage. The fewer bridges, screws, and wheels, the better! In fact, trying to spot a screw from the front is like searching for a needle in a haystack, amplifying that stunning levitating effect.
Visually, the three elements have identical circumferences, adding complexity to the movement’s design. The single-barrel architecture is elegantly suspended, enhancing the levitation effect and presenting a genuine challenge for the movement designers. The balance wheel oscillates at 2 o’clock and captivates the wearer eyes like a flying saucer.
In Max’s imaginative world, everything seems to float, and the dial perfectly follows suit! Tilted just right to highlight MB&F’s expertise in conical gearing, this feature is a tricky feat to pull off while keeping it reliable. Rarely seen in watchmaking, it adds a wonderfully subtle three-dimensional flair that’s as intriguing as discreet.
This technically complex to achieve architecture reveals a simple and unique structure that makes understanding how a mechanical watch functions surprisingly straightforward.
Surrounding this movement is what Max playfully dubs the “amphitheatre”: a beautifully bevelled flange that channels the grandeur of Greco-Roman theatres, spotlighting the stunning intricacies of the movement like a gladiator in the arena.
Flip the SP One over, and you’ll uncover the other side of its arena, showcasing the meticulous hand finishing and overall attention to detail typical of MB&F – one of the rare watchmakers today perpetuating traditional hand finishing and artisanal craftsmanship.
The MB&F touch is unmistakably present in the SP One. Beyond the desire to surprise and take risks, it’s the meticulous attention to the movement that reveals the family ties. The complexity lies in maintaining finesse and elegance while preserving classic codes. All wheels are hand-angled, with prominent chatons, and the finish balance is subtle between satin, polished, and micro-blasted surfaces.
A satisfying pebble
Beyond the unconventional construction of the movement and traditional hand-finishing, the pebble case design further sets the SP One apart.
Despite being thin, this watch paradoxically boasts a three-dimensional presence. Imagine holding a perfectly-smooth pebble, polished by years in a riverbed: that’s the feel of the SP One. Its 38mm case, sleek like a spaceship and bezel-free, features sapphire glass that seamlessly blends front and back with the case. This design gives the watch a captivating floating effect also emphasized by its cleverly crafted lugs. A closer look reveals that they’re not directly attached to the upper case; instead, they rise elegantly from the lower case, creating a subtle yet distinct gap between each hand-polished lug and the upper section.
Overall, the SP One is as smooth to the touch as it looks, inviting you to run your fingers over its curves. It’s like a tiny UFO landed on your wrist, blending unconventional design with an organic, tactile sensation.
While the SP One is MB&F’s thinnest watch, it’s not about competing for the title of the slimmest watch in the world. Instead, it embodies a harmonious balance in design and proportions, prioritizing elegance and artistry over mere thinness to achieve true equilibrium.

Rolex has chosen to introduce its very first ceramic dial on an 18 ct white gold version of the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. In the same material, with the same green colour and the same lustre, this Cerachrom dial and the daytime half of the green and black bezel insert echo each other perfectly.
The perfect match
Rolex is introducing its first-ever dial made of high-technology ceramic. This inaugural green Cerachrom component makes its debut on an Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II with winding crown on the left side of the case and date aperture at 9 o’clock, a version which additionally, this year, is presented in 18 ct white gold.
The new Cerachrom dial – created in the same way as dials in natural stone, by fitting a disc of material onto a brass plate – displays the same shade of green as the lower half of the two-colour green and black Cerachrom bezel insert that frames the watch face.This perfect tonal harmony, which remains true under all lighting conditions, is achieved by using the same type of ceramic to produce both elements.
This new version of the GMT-Master II is mounted on an Oyster bracelet equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp.
The GMT-Master II is driven by calibre 3285, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date and an additional time zone in 24-hour format, as well as the hours, minutes and seconds.
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.
One instrument, several time zones
Designed as a navigation aid for professionals criss-crossing the globe, the GMT-Master became the watch of choice for travellers. It has a unique and instantly recognizable design with a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated insert, which has been made available in single-colour versions as well as in various dual-colour combinations – the lower half symbolizing daytime hours and the upper signalling night-time hours. The GMT-Master, a true ‘tool watch’, has evolved continually to offer increasing technical performance. In 1982, Rolex unveiled the
GMT-Master II, with a movement allowing the hour hand to be set independently of the other hands.
With traditional hour, minute and seconds hands, a triangle- tipped 24-hour hand, and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, the GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and a reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone. The date is synchronized with the local time.
High-technology ceramic
Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics to create particular elements of its watch cases – notably monobloc bezels and monobloc bezel inserts. Not only are these materials particularly scratch resistant, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to their chemical composition, the high-tech ceramics are inert and cannot corrode. The brand has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components.
On the new version of the GMT-Master II, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a two-colour, 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert in green and black ceramic. The moulded, recessed graduations and numerals are coated with platinum via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). The bezel’s knurled edge offers excellent grip and can be manipulated with ease.
The Oyster case, symbol of waterproofness
A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 40 mm Oyster case of the GMT-Master II is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case of the version presented is crafted from a solid block of 18 ct white gold. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool employed by approved watchmakers. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.
Calibre 3285
The GMT-Master II is powered by calibre 3285, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2018 and introduced on the model the same year. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance, particularly in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.
Calibre 3285 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorous, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in
a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, further enhancing the movement’s shock resistance.
Calibre 3285 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of this movement extends to approximately 70 hours.
Oyster bracelet and Oysterlock safety clasp
The GMT-Master II in 18 ct white gold with a green Cerachrom dial matched with the green and black Cerachrom bezel insert is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed in the late 1930s, this three-piece link metal bracelet is known for its robustness.
The Oyster bracelet of the GMT-Master II is furnished with the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It also includes the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, that allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. On the version presented, it includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.
Superlative Chronometer certification
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). These in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding.
The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.
The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

The face, sculpted from marble ceramic and enhanced with an inner palladium sheet covering, combines robustness, delicacy, and precision. This unprecedented material, developed by Trilobe, allows for marble work with tolerances of less than a centimeter in thickness, necessary to integrate the horological mechanism.
Every step of the creation presented a challenge: design, sketches, modeling, mechanical tests, materials, prototyping, adjustments, molding… A jeweler’s work where technique and expressiveness meet.
A Mechanism that Follows the Lines of the Face
Here, nothing is round, nothing is standard.. The mechanism of Le Temps Retrouvé is made up of 95% custom-made horological components, manufactured and decorated by hand by our partner, Manufacture Masur, based in Sainte Croix, a renowned center for fine mechanical art.
We drew inspiration from the heritage of Parisian pendulettes, while transposing it into a futuristic vision: an unconventional mechanical architecture, designed to merge with human morphology and adapt to every curve, every contour of the face.
• The eyes are not mere sculpted lines; they are moving gears. By observing their surroundings, they indicate the minutes with micro-millimeter precision, while subtly altering the expression of the face.
• The temples are not fixed: in the form of rosettes, each petal gradually opens hour by hour, on one side then the other. They close in the blink of an eye after a 12-hour cycle, revealing the hours in a mechanical ballet.
The movement of these rosettes is orchestrated by a set of cams, irregularly shaped mechanical pieces, and through right-angle transmissions that allow them to complete a full turn in 12 hours.
An Unconventional Mechanical Architecture
Here, the movement escapes conventions: it does not fit into a box nor follow a traditional geometric form. Its architecture has been entirely rethought to integrate into the aesthetic of the sculpture:

The Black Bay 58 has earned a reputation as an enthusiast’s favourite, and now the watch is getting the Master Chronometer treatment. For the first time, the new all-burgundy Black Bay 58 also comes on a 5-link bracelet with T-fit, too.
The Black Bay 58 is named after the year in which the first TUDOR divers’ watch waterproof to 200 metres, the reference 7924, dubbed the “Big Crown”, was introduced. Among other aesthetic allusions to this famous historic watch, this model has a 39mm diameter case, in keeping with the characteristic proportions of the 1950s. This new edition of the Black Bay 58 retains all the core design elements from TUDOR throughout the ages and includes aesthetic notes from a prototype TUDOR Submariner ref. 79190 developed in the ‘90s. The watch boasted a brilliant burgundy dial with a matching bezel. It never saw production, but this design now lives on in the form of a brand-new Black Bay 58. On top of the new design, the new Black Bay 58 gets the Master Chronometer certification, one of the industry’s most demanding standards in terms of chronometry and resistance to magnetic fields. Each fully assembled watch is tested in Switzerland by the Federal Institute of Metrology or METAS. To tie the whole package together, the new Black Bay 58 is now available on a 5-link bracelet, a 3-link bracelet, or a rubber strap. All three have TUDOR’s rapid adjustment system known as T-fit, making the watch more wearable than ever before.

With the introduction of this brand-new Black Bay 58, TUDOR has successfully submitted yet another model for tests to obtain Master Chronometer certification. This is part of a constant bid to improve the quality of its products and another step towards a future where the entire TUDOR collection will be Master Chronometer certified. This certification, offered by a Swiss government body, METAS, requires a substantial number of changes to a regular TUDOR Manufacture Calibre and comes as an independent confirmation of the exceptional quality of the TUDOR watches.
COMPREHENSIVE INDEPENDENT CERTIFICATION AND HIGH STANDARDS
METAS Master Chronometer certification is comprehensive and covers the main functional characteristics of a watch including precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve. Its standards are incredibly high, starting with precision. In order to qualify, a watch must be able to function within a 5-second range of variation each day (0/+5), that is to say 5 seconds less than the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) (-4/+6) carried out on a single movement and a second less than TUDOR’s internal standard (-2/+4), which is applied to the brand’s models with a Manufacture Calibre. The certification also guarantees the timekeeping accuracy of a watch subjected to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss. Finally, it also guarantees the waterproofness claimed by the manufacturer as well as the power reserve. It should also be noted that two prerequisites are necessary before the certification can be obtained: Swiss manufacturing must conform with the criteria of Swiss Made, and the movement must be certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

EMBLEMATIC LOOK
The Black Bay remains one of TUDOR’s most recognized and recognizable lines. In the Black Bay 58, the case offers the proportions of a 39mm case with a thinner profile. The burgundy unidirectional rotatable bezel offers very prehensible sides and its insert shows subtly curved numerals aligning with the outline of the outer ring. However, the aesthetic details don’t stop at case dimensions and bezel. The seconds hand recalls the look of the early diving watches of the brand with a lollipop design, while the satin burgundy dial is softly radial-brushed for a very subtle shine under direct light. Ergonomics have evolved as well, with a redesigned crown, reminiscent of the curves found on the crowns of the brand’s historical technical watches, that is set flush to the middle case band so that its tube is not visible.
3-LINK “RIVET-STYLE” BRACELET, 5-LINK BRACELET, OR RUBBER STRAP, ALL WITH “T-FIT”
The 3-link “rivet-style” bracelet of the Black Bay 58 model visually refers to the riveted bracelets used by TUDOR in the 1950s and 1960s. These were famous for having rivet heads visible on the side of the links. These bracelets also had a distinct stepped design, where every link, going from the clasp, was slightly larger than the previous one. These two aesthetic elements appear on today’s version, which combines modern manufacturing methods with solid links and “rivets” with laser-finished heads. This bracelet, along with the 5-link stainless steel bracelet, also comes with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp, an ingenuous system for rapid length adjustment. Easy to use, requiring no tools and offering five positions, this practical system allows wearers to carry out a fine, instant adjustment of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8mm. The clasp also features ceramic ball bearings that ensure a smooth and secure closure in addition to adding a pleasing tactile element to the action of the clasp.
A cut-to-size black rubber strap option is also available for the Black Bay 58. It comes in three sizes, fitted with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp for the perfect fit. On the inside, it features the signature snowflake motif for added grip, and it is form-fitted specifically for this model.
THE ESSENCE OF BLACK BAY
The Black Bay line features dials inspired by the TUDOR divers’ watches produced during the 1950s. It borrows the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as “Snowflake” from models that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalogue. Its shoulderless crown and the characteristics of its case are reminiscent of the first generations of TUDOR divers’ watches.
The Black Bay line is the result of the subtle blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary watchmaking. Far from simply being an identical re-release of a classic, it brings together 70 years of TUDOR dive watches, whilst at the same time being resolutely anchored in the present. It is neo-vintage in conception, yet its manufacturing techniques, reliability, robustness and the quality of its finishes are consistent with today’s more rigorous requirements.
THE TUDOR MANUFACTURE
Every TUDOR watch is assembled and fully tested to TUDOR’s superior standards at the new TUDOR Manufacture located in Le Locle, Switzerland. This new state-of-the-art facility, bringing together the know-how of watchmakers with the best in production management and automated testing systems, was completed in 2021 after three years of construction. All decked out in TUDOR red, the Manufacture spans over four levels totalling 5,500 square meters and is physically and visually connected to the neighbouring Kenissi Manufacture, the TUDOR movement production facility founded in 2016. With Kenissi and a network of TUDOR-owned affiliates, the brand has been able to integrate the development and production of high-performance mechanical calibres. THE TUDOR GUARANTEE

A. Lange & Söhne incorporated two of the most sophisticated horological complications in the MINUTE REPEATER PERPETUAL. A newly developed, manually wound movement breathes life into this rare and ambitious combination of a minute repeater with a perpetual calendar. The elaborately, artisanally finished timepiece boasting an enamel dial crafted in-house comes in a 950 platinum edition, limited to 50 pieces.

With the MINUTE REPEATER PERPETUAL, A. Lange & Söhne once again launches a watch with a minute repeater, this time pairing it with a perpetual calendar. Each one of these complications alone represents a technical feat in itself, the combination of the two, however, poses an even greater challenge. This holds true for the engineers as well as the watchmakers, since the precise tuning and harmonising of all the mechanisms requires a superior degree of technical expertise and craftsmanship.
Classic minute repeater with special features
When the slide integrated into the left-hand case flank is actuated, the chiming mechanism strikes the hours, sounding at a low pitch, the quarter hours with a double tone, and the minutes that have elapsed since the last quarter hour with a higher-pitched tone. The impressive duet delivered by two differently tuned gongs comprises a repertoire of 720 different sequences-one for every minute in the twelve-hour cycle. The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals the orchestrated movements of the gong hammers and the gongs, resulting in their melodious sound. An ingenious system of precisely choreographed racks, snails, levers, and wheels controls the 194-part mechanism.
To optimise the operation and functionality of the classic minute repeater, the striking mechanism was enhanced with further intricate devices, among these the pause elimination feature. It skips the pause between the hour and minute strike when no double tone must be struck for the quarter hours in the first 14 minutes after the top of the hour. To prevent damage to the chiming mechanism, it was also equipped with a safety device so that the minute repeater cannot be activated while the crown is pulled. Consequently, the crown cannot be pulled when the chiming mechanism is active. Finally, the patented hammer blocker causes the hammers to dwell in their home position for a fraction of a second after the gongs have been struck. Thus, the re-bounding hammers cannot bounce and strike the gongs again.

The art of crystal-clear sound
Just like all Lange watches with a striking mechanism, the MINUTE REPEATER PERPETUAL is designed to superb acoustic quality standards and has a unique timbre. A lucid, clear, and reverberant sound is assured by the hand-tuned gongs that harmonise perfectly with the acoustic characteristics of platinum, the case material. The completion of a minute repeater is highly elaborate; it also calls for acute hearing and extreme dexterity. All components are carefully harmonised with one another by a Lange master watchmaker. This requires adapting, multiple disassemblies, reworking, reassembly and finally testing. As far as the hammers are concerned, the key issues are material, shape, size, weight, and hardness – and above all, just like with a piano, strike.

Perpetual calendar with Lange outsize date
While the minute repeater chimes the time in the here and now, the technical virtuosity of the perpetual calendar will persist into the distant future. Across decades, the mechanism will assure the precise display of the date, day of the week and month, even taking into account the leap years. The calendar indications must only be corrected by one day but not until 1 March 2100; according to the rules of the Gregorian calendar, the leap year will then be skipped. This also applies to the moon-phase display that so closely emulates the duration of the synodic orbit of the earth’s satellite that it would take 122.6 years for the display to be corrected by one day. The mechanism is highly sophisticated yet excels with its ease of operation: in typical
Lange manner, all calendar indications can jointly be advanced with one single corrector.
An eye-catching detail of the timepiece ‒ the enamel dial
The technical sophistication of this multiple-complication watch is reflected in the high-quality artisanship of the four-part dial. Made of white gold and filled with black enamel, it is crafted in the A. Lange & Söhne manufacture in a time-consuming procedure. The immaculate, glossy black surface offers the displays and the characteristic Lange outsize date an elegant stage,providing a contrasting backdrop, thus assuring excellent legibility. The subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock accommodates the day-of-week and the 24-hour displays while a second one located at 3 o’clock is graced by the month and leap-year indications. A third subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock showcases the small seconds and the moon-phase display: both moons in 750 gold are surrounded by more than 100 hand-engraved stars.
This exceptional timepiece exhibits a further salient detail: all four dial sections are embellished with a circular lesene, a fine border in white gold. On the main dial, it runs between the outsize date and the Roman numerals; on the subsidiary dials, the lesenes separate the inner display sections from the outer ones.
Artisanally finished new manufacture calibre
The sapphire-crystal caseback provides fascinating insights into the technical complexity and the high degree of artisanal finishing of the newly developed Lange manufacture calibre L122.2. Whether clearly visible or concealed, all 640 parts of the manually wound movement address all expectations that are associated with A. Lange & Söhne’s craftsmanship. The aesthetic highlights include the balance cock that is engraved with a free-hand technique, with the whiplash spring mounted on top. The lateral setscrew assures the precision regulation of the interaction between the escapement and the oscillation system. The three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver is decorated with black rhodiumed engravings. Four screwed gold chatons adorn its grained surface.
Whereas the greater part of the repeater and the perpetual calendar mechanisms lies concealed below the dial, the most important elements of the striking mechanism – the two manually bent gongs framing the movement and the two gong hammers – are resplendent in their beauty. The hammers provide an additional focal point: they are elaborately finished with black polish, a technique that involves a considerable amount of manual work. It ensures that incident light is reflected in merely one single direction. Viewed from one perspective only, the surface is jet black, yet seen from all other angles, it appears to have a mirror-like gloss. The barrel bridge, the centrifugal-governor bridge and the gong hammer bridges are adorned with solarisation, creating a visual entity. The most dynamic component of the movement, the centrifugal governor is mounted in an overhung position, making it almost silent when operational. It rotates at a speed of more than 2,000 revolutions per minute when the striking mechanism is running. This guarantees the uniform cadence of the strikes. The Lange manufacture calibre is equipped with a screw balance and a freely oscillating balance spring crafted in-house. Decorated with solarisation, the mainspring barrel delivers a maximum power reserve of 72 hours.

A Story Rooted in the Love for Racing
To understand the significance of the TAG Heuer Carrera, one must go back t o the early 1960s, when Jack Heuer envisioned a watch that would reflect his love for motorsport. Inspired by the legendary Carrera Panamericana Road race in Mexico held in the 1950s — a treacherous event celebrated for its daring and glory-Jack Heuer sought to create a timepiece that captured the spirit o f the drivers who braved it. He wanted legibility, precision, and practicality: a watch that could withstand the adrenaline of competition while being effortlessly elegant. The TAG Heuer Carrera was born in 1963. With its clean lines and innovative chronograph design, it quickly became synonymous with the golden age of racing. But what cemented its place in the world of motorsport was Jack Heuer’s clever decision to present Heuer watches to drivers, including gold Heuer Carreras. These watches, worn by some of the most iconic figures in Motor racing and beyond, quickly became symbols of success – and in some cases, good fortune too.
One of the most remarkable examples of the TAG Heuer Carrera’s “Success Watch” status came with the launch of the TAG Heuer Carrera reference 1158 in 1970. Introduced to celebrate Heuer’s listing on the Swiss stock exchange, this watch would be worn by members of the Heuer family, including Jack Heuer himself. A mischievous horse takes center stage on the dial of the Arceau watch , decorated with horsehair marquetry, engraving and miniature painting.
The Arceau watch , designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978, plays with metamorphosis and highlights the creativity and expertise of Hermès. Its round case with asymmetrical stirrup-shaped attachments lends itself to artisanal expressions as demanding as they are unexpected. Playful animation, engraving, miniature painting and horsehair marquetry, the dial of the Arceau watch reinterprets the mischievous horse imagined by Dimitri Rybaltchenko for the Rocabar de rire scarf .
The slightly mocking animal likes to play the fool. And rather than go for a walk, it prefers to stay warm under its striped wool blanket. Similar to a photograph, this whimsical and playful image comes to life on a hand-engraved and hand-painted mobile: animated by a spring mechanism connected to a push button at 9 o’clock. The mischievous horse sticks out its tongue and displays its most beautiful profile against a background of colorful stripes in horsehair marquetry. These combined crafts require patience, attention to detail, and dexterity to unite in the extreme finesse of the dial.
Between reliefs and depths, the engraver sculpts the horse using traditional burins and chisels. Once the applique is crafted, the miniature painter searches for the perfect tones, which he applies in several layers of micro-paint. Heat-dried in a kiln, they display a palette of nuances, volumes, and unique details. Finally, to compose the weave of the dial, the craftsman meticulously selects horsehair of different colors, cuts them, then glues them one by one onto the brass base.
The Arceau watch humorously revisits the Rocabar equestrian motif to designate the ” bar rug” – evoking the traditional striped rug of Hermès saddlery. And its funny and quirky horse is revealed in a precious 41 mm diameter white gold case.
Hours, minutes and the “Impulse on Demand” function are driven by the Hermès H1837 manufacture movement, which reveals the finishing and the scattering of Hs adorning its bridges and oscillating weight through the sapphire crystal caseback. As a final touch, an alligator strap highlights the anthracite, red and straw shades of the dial of this watch, limited to 12 pieces.
