Wait no more. The bright new TYPE 5 L is finally out in all its shine. And shine it does. At the movies or a wild rave, driving through a tunnel or exploring a bat cave, rest assured you won’t go incognito. As clues are hard to ignore, you must have guessed what L stands for. Neither lemon nor lavender, but L as in ‘Luminescent’. Thanks to its full Super-LumiNova® inlay,the entire dial casts a strong glow when the lights are low.

Oil-Filled for Optimal Legibility

The luminous enhancement of the TYPE 5 L is paired to the Ressence oil-filled upper chamber, a hallmark of every TYPE 5. The oil cancels out light refraction and makes the watch readable from any angle, providing a clear and crisp display that is essential for divers. The extra luminescent dial only further boosts this legibility.

Meeting Diver’s Watch Standards

The TYPE 5 L meets the rigorous ISO 6425 standard required for underwater exploration, adhering to the highest levels of safety and reliability. The watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters (10 ATM). It also passed tests of magnetic and shock resilience, among others. The robust Grade 5 titanium construction guarantees durability while maintaining a lightweight profile.

Precision Bezel and Secure Lock System

The TYPE 5 L features the unidirectional rotating bezel with an easy-to-grip tactile design, allowing for precise and reliable adjustments. This is a critical feature for divers who rely on their watch to track immersion time accurately. Additionally, every TYPE 5 caseback deploys the Ressence Compression Lock System (RCLS), a mechanismwhich enables wearers to lock the compression gasket for waterproofing.

A black and white ‘La Gara’ dial, timeless symbol of the competitive spirit.

Chopard’s Mille Miglia collection welcomes a new design for the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph model. Its 40.5 mm case in Chopard’s exclusive Lucent Steel™, made with a recycling rate of at least 80%, frames a dial inspired by the black and white chequered flag marking the arrival of a motor-race winner. Symbolising the competitive spirit, this dial is called ‘La Gara’, the Italian word for race. It is topped by a superb ‘glass box’ crystal ensuring optimal opening onto the dial and hence maximum legibility. Competitive spirit and sense of camaraderie; energy and dynamism; speed and style: such are the attributes epitomising Italy’s celebrated 1000 Miglia Italian classic car race that Chopard has been annually expressing for the past 36 years through the watches of the Mille Miglia collection.

Watches and cars: marvels of engineering

Like a timepiece, a vehicle is a marvel of engineering, as all devotees of watchmaking and automobiles know – and Chopard even more so, since the Maison has been inextricably linked with the automobile world since it became world sponsor and official timekeeper for Italy’s celebrated 1000 Miglia way back in 1988.

Reflecting his family’s passion for classic car races, the Maison’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has personally taken part in the 1000 Miglia every year since, covering more than 30,000 miles since 1989.

The partnership – one of the longest in history between a watchmaker and a motorsports event – has now seen the creation of 36 watch editions in the Mille Miglia collection, all capturing the essence and spirit of what Enzo Ferrari called ‘the most beautiful race in the world’.

Renewing the automobile passion, competitive spirit and emotions of the 1000 Miglia with each new edition, the Maison’s designers have constantly pushed the limits of their creativity. With the new Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph model, they are now drawing inspiration from the wealth of details linked to motor-racing symbols.

Dynamic, luminous and comfortable

The meticulous construction and finishing of this 40.5 mm case are distinguished by harmonious shapes and volumes aligned with the aesthetic of the historical cars competing in the 1000 Miglia. These well-mastered proportions ensure the watch is not intrusive when driving, while looking just as good with evening wear as it does with a race suit.

Made from Lucent Steel™, this beautiful ‘bodywork’ features all the characteristics associated with Chopard’s exclusive alloy that took a full four years to develop. Named after its luminous, gently reflective appearance that gives it an almost incandescent shimmer, Lucent Steel™ is not only of surgical quality and naturally anti-allergenic – ensuring it is dermo-compatible and pleasant to wear – as well as 50% harder than conventional steel – making it more than capable of handling the knocks, bumps and scrapes of competitive driving. Lucent Steel™ is also REACH-certified as being responsibly made with a recycling rate of at least 80%.

The bezels, crowns and pushers are in this same material with contrasting polished and satin-brushed finishes. Moreover, the pushers are knurled to create a motif recalling brake pedals, while the notched crown guarantees optimal grip. On either end of the case, the lugs are welded – a token of fine craftsmanship sure to be appreciated by devotees of meticulous watchmaking. Finally, the pin buckle has been redesigned compared with previous models, picking up the play on polished/satin-brushed finishes featured on the case.

A ‘La Gara’ dial inspired by a symbol of motor-racing victory and offering perfect readability appreciated by athletes

Preserving strong cues from the automotive world, and inspired by race cars, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele envisioned a two-tone dial with a circular satin-finish silver-toned base, punctuated by snailed black counters. Named ‘La Gara’ (the Italian word for ‘the race’ or ‘the competition’), this dial picks up the colours of the chequered flag waved at the end of a motor race to salute the first car crossing the finishing line. The three black counters, as well as the shape of the hands and Arabic numerals are also nods to the characteristic design of collector’s car dashboards.

The white minutes track and tachymeter scale – essential elements in making speed and distance calculations – are both prominent, while the dial markings along with the hours and minutes hands are coated with white Grade XI Super-Luminova® to ensure a high degree of legibility.

The central sweep-seconds hand is red-tipped both for practical and aesthetic purposes – as well as to complement the famous red ‘1000 Miglia’ logo applied to each dial.

A true exercise in ‘practical beauty’, the dial is protected by a deep, glass-box sapphire crystal secured by a slim bezel. Watch glasses of this type procure an obvious aesthetic advantage by giving the dial a sense of perspective. They serve to maximise the depth of the dial opening, as light pours in from above as well as from the sides, creating exquisite shimmering effects.

A watch ‘engine’ with certified precision

The back of the watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal affording a view of the self-winding chronograph movement certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute and endowed with a 54-hour power reserve.

A competitive driver himself, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele recognises the importance of being equipped with an accurate chronograph while taking part in events such as the 1000 Miglia, where a few fractions of a second can mean the difference between success or failure in a timed stage.

During the heat of competition, racers will appreciate the 4 Hz frequency of the movement, the stop-second function, a tachymeter scale as well as the layout of the three 12-hour, 30-minute and small seconds subdials.

This model is clearly intended for drivers seeking to surpass themselves – much in the spirit of the Maison’s legendary ambassadors Jacky Ickx and Romain Dumas. 

A strap inspired by the automotive world

The Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph model featuring a La Gara dial is teamed with a perforated black calfskin strap evoking traditional driving gloves and matching the dial counters. Enhanced with ecru bridle stitching, it is secured by a Lucent SteelTM pin buckle.

A TIMEPIECE THAT BRIDGES MOTORSPORT LEGACY AND INNOVATION

Carrera name itself.

Its origins begin at the legendary Carrera Panamericana race, reputed to be one of the most dangerous in the world. It inspired Porsche, which won its first-class victory at the Carrera Panamericana race in 1954, to name its most powerful engine variants Carrera. At the same time, Jack Heuer, chose to name his new 1963 chronograph Carrera, after hearing about the race’s highly evocative name from the racing driver Rodriguez brothers at the side of the infamous US racetrack Sebring in 1962.

Of course, another race with which both TAG Heuer and Porsche are historically connected is the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Porsche’s history at Le Mans is legendary, having secured numerous victories over the years, making them the most successful manufacturer in the history of the race with 19 overall wins. The development of the Porsche 963, governed by the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid) regulations, demonstrates this commitment to innovation. The Porsche 963 is the pinnacle of Porsche’s engineering expertise, based on a Multimatic* chassis derived from the LMP2 category – a second edition Le Mans Prototype developed and designed to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It features an advanced combustion engine able to run on renewable fuels, with its origins in the Porsche 918 Spyder road car. The Porsche 963 has been gathering victories on many famous racetracks across the globe.

Design and Engineering Excellence

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963 is a remarkable timepiece inspired by the Porsche 963. Limited to just 963 pieces worldwide – a nod to the name of the racing car -, each watch incorporates precision and performance, paying homage to Porsche’s racing heritage and dominance with elements that capture the excitement of endurance racing.

Blending automotive engineering with horology, the sub-dials feature four Super- LumiNova (SLN) blocks, drawing inspiration from Porsche’s innovative LED light design on the modern-day icon, the Porsche 911. In the dark, the SLN blocks on the dial, along with the SLN-coated date revealer, illuminate the Porsche-inspired design elements, enhancing the watch’s visual appeal and practicality. These elements ensure exceptional legibility in all conditions, resonating with the endurance of 24- hour races, as drivers will be racing day and night.

The positioning of the red indexes at 04:00PM on the dial symbolizes the excitement and adrenaline associated with the countdown to a race start, capturing the essence of competitive racing within the watch’s design language.

Crafted with boldness and technical sophistication, the watch features a striking skeleton dial with tubular shapes reminiscent of Porsche’s racing car chassis— reflecting the minimalist yet robust construction seen in motorsport. The bezel, made from forged carbon, mirrors the lightweight, high-performance components of the Porsche 963, enhancing both aesthetics and the connection to motorsport.

High craftsmanship is evident with the in-house TH20-00 movement, featuring a personalized red column wheel, emphasizing the technical savoir faire of this vertical clutch chronograph movement. The vertical position of the chronograph mechanism’s coupling, similar to the systems found in cars connecting the engine’s flywheel with the transmission, in the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963 provides for a smooth and “jump free“ actuation of the stopping function.

The watch’s rubber strap shape is inspired by the NACA-style low-drag air inlets, often featured on Porsche race cars all the way back to the record-breaking Porsche 917, adding a further subtle nod to the deep shared heritage in endurance racing. The colors chosen for the watch are the iconic racing colours of Porsche motorsport: white, red and black.

Distinctive Porsche Elements

TAG Heuer has integrated several distinctive Porsche elements into the design of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963, which will delight Porsche fans. The bezel proudly features a luminescent Porsche logo, allowing for legibility even in the dark, while the strap decor showcases the Porsche 963 logo. Additionally, the watch incorporates Porsche’s iconic steering wheel motif in the oscillating mass, and a Porsche logo in 3D on the side of the steel case, underscoring the integration of the car manufacturer inspired details.

In honor of the 20-year jubilee of the Schauenstein castle and of Caminada’s culinary prowess, Hublot unveils its new Big Bang Unico All Black Schloss Schauenstein, underscoring its commitment to distinction and support for the best in their fields.

As the watch’s name suggests, the concept revolves around the color black, highly prominent throughout the various features of the timepiece, a design philosophy inspired by Andreas Caminada’s looks and reflecting Hublot’s desire to explore ‘invisible visibility’ in high fashion style. The watch features a 42mm microblasted black ceramic case, offering a sleek, modern aesthetic, with black plated H-shaped polished and microblasted titanium screws and a satin-finished black plated titanium crown with black rubber. The bezel, made of microblasted and polished black ceramic, complemented by the satined and microblasted black plated pushers, add depth and texture to the design. Additionally, the microblasted black ceramic case back is engraved with a depiction of Schauenstein’s castle in shimmering silver tones.

Elevating the watch, the matte black dial serves as a canvas for the applied silver-toned logo of Andreas Caminada on the small seconds counter, reflecting the spirit of culinary fineness. The black plated satin-finished hands provide a striking contrast against the dial.

At the heart of the Big Bang Unico All Black Schloss Schauenstein beats the in-house Hublot HUB1280 self-winding chronograph movement. Introduced in 2010 as the first movement designed by the manufacture, the Unico calibre saw refinement in 2018 with the launch of the 1280 reference, a slimmer iteration tailored to a broader range of wrists, used in this new release in collaboration with chef Caminada.

The watch proudly exhibits its inner workings with a skeletonized dial, offering a glimpse of the column wheel automatic winding mechanism that orchestrates its chronograph functions, and a date at 3 o’clock. Boasting a 72-hour power reserve and enhanced accuracy, it incorporates five patents for facilitated assembly, modernized architecture, and increased performance. The Unico 2 calibre offers a sleek 42-mm case and notable technical developments, including gentler winding, faultless chronograph display, and exceptional shock resistance, further emphasizing the best for the best with this limited edition.

The Big Bang Unico All Black Schloss Schauenstein comes in a presentation case complete with a black ceramic and black titanium deployant buckle clasp on the black lined rubber strap. Each watch is accompanied by a signed booklet by Andreas Caminada, a custom-engraved knife, and a knife block, reflecting Caminada’s passion for precision and authenticity in watchmaking and gastronomy.

Limited to just 20 pieces, each watch is a symbol of exclusivity and craftsmanship. Additionally, a unique piece, customized with the Fundaziun Uccelin logo, will be auctioned for charity during the AC Masters event, taking place on June 11th, offering collectors a unique opportunity to own an exceptional timepiece.

Daniel Arsham is a New York based artist whose practice spans fine art, architecture, performance, and film. Arsham’s iconic works meld the past, present and future, showcasing the malleability and power of nostalgia, often through references to moments of the late 20th century. Eroded casts of modern artifacts and contemporary human figures, his works are crafted out of geological material such as sand, selenite and volcanic ash. These materials allow for the appearance and aesthetic of erosion or archeological, future relics, as Arsham has dubbed them.
