Ressence presents the limited-edition TYPE 8 Indigo, a watch born out of the brand’s exploration into the
ancient Japanese craft of indigo dyeing.
This exceptional watch is Ressence’s contribution to The Indigo Project, an initiative led by its longtime partner, Shellman in Tokyo, to celebrate the renewal and expansion of their retail space at Isetan Shinjuku department store, becoming the largest luxury watch destination in Japan.
The TYPE 8 Indigo tells the story of time in vibrant blue, showcasing the delicate beauty of natural indigo through the intricate application of silk thread. Much like the growth rings of a tree marking the passage of years, the dial design evokes the flow of time in a visually captivating manner.
Chosen for its expansive dial surface, with only Minute and Hour discs, the TYPE 8 allows the indigodyed silk thread to take centre stage. For the first time, Ressence collaborated with Swiss Arts & Métiers artisans to craft the dial, resulting in an organic yet structured pattern. The indigo pigments reveal a spectrum of shades, from electric blues to nearly black tones, creating a vibrant, everevolving watch that offers something new with each glance.
“Applying thread to a dial is an uncommon practice in watchmaking, and for Ressence, this marks the first time we have incorporated an ‘Arts & Métiers’ craft into one of our watches.” says Benoît Mintiens, Founder of Ressence. “A 0.2mm-diameter and 2.5 m-long Indigo silk thread was selected to cover the dial in a spiral pattern, symbolising the natural rhythm of time.”

The silk thread
Ressence’s journey to create the TYPE 8 Indigo began with a commitment to authenticity. This led to the choice of thread as the ideal medium to showcase the true essence of natural indigo. Ressence partnered with Buaisou, a company based in Kamiita-cho, Tokushima Prefecture, the heart of indigo dyeing. Buaisou cultivates their own indigo plants and manages every aspect of the dyeing process inhouse, ensuring the highest quality and respect for tradition
A legacy of indigo
Indigo is said to be the oldest dye known to mankind. Indigo dyeing is a centuries-old Japanese craft, renowned for its deep warm hue, known as ‘Japan Blue.’ Believed to be introduced to Japan via the silk trade of India or through the ancient cultures of China, its production in the Land of the Rising Sun began as early as the 6th century. The indigo plant, Indigofera, an annual plant in the Fabaceae family, is prized for its colour and medicinal properties. Its leaves are harvested and fermented over months to produce “Sukumo,” the natural pigment that has been a cornerstone of Eastern art and textile.
The Process
On a standard TYPE 8, the distance between the dial’s external surface and the inside of the sapphire is only 0.25mm, so the titanium dial is carved out to accommodate the thickness of the thread, ensuring a flush fit beneath the sapphire. Due to technical constraints, some areas of the dial cannot allow for a 0.2mm reduction in thickness. As a result, two grey pockets are visible on the outside of the main minute dial. Any exposed areas are finished in neutral grey PVD, allowing the vibrant indigo hues to stand out even more.
Arts & Métiers
The delicate task of placing and bonding the silk thread to the titanium components was expertly carried out by a renowned Geneva-based atelier. Each dial requires two days of meticulous work by a skilled craftswoman. The thread is applied in a single piece, spiralling from the outer edge inward, following the contours of the cavity. To preserve the silk’s natural visual effect, special bonding materials are used to prevent glue from seeping into the fibres and altering the colour.

High Watchmaking meets High Jewellery
A Vacheron Constantin watch cannot be technical without being precious. Over the course of the Maison’s more than two and a half centuries of existence, this attitude has constantly stimulated its creativity. Born at the height of the Age of Enlightenment, this philosophy specific to Vacheron Constantin was nurtured in particular by La Fabrique, a unique organisation encompassing more than 5,000 watchmaking and goldsmithing professionals in 18th-century Geneva. Today, Vacheron Constantin continues to perpetuate this legacy through timepieces whose aesthetics stem from research that is equally thorough in exploring decorative arts as in ensuring smooth mechanical operation.
With the Traditionnelle tourbillon High Jewellery watch, this approach finds an exceptional new interpretation. Entirely paved with baguette-cut diamonds, this timepiece offers a remarkable symbiosis between expertise in artistic crafts and mastery of horological complications. The tourbillon regulator equipping its ultra-thin movement serves as a visual starting point for the gemsetting adorning the dial and which blossoms like a sparkling corolla. This composition is complemented by a sloping inner bezel ring and bezel that are likewise gemset, as indeed are the crown, lugs, caseband and clasp.
The magic of invisible setting
For this latest watch joining the collection, invisible setting was chosen to highlight the distinctive structure of its ornamentation. Invented in the early 20th century, this technique consists of setting perfectly calibrated stones so that the metal prongs serving as visible fastening points vanish, hence its name. Instead, master jewellers fashion T-shaped rails (channels), while the gems are cut with a groove on each side of the culet – the bottom facet of the stone. The gems are then slid one by one between the channels to form diamond paving with no visible joints.
For the setting to be perfect, the gems must be cut with absolute precision. This is a major challenge for this watch, whose radiating setting plane requires multiple calibrations of the baguette-cut diamonds that are increasingly larger the further away they are from the tourbillon. The same difficulty is found on the lugs with their trapeze-shaped baguette-cut diamonds, as well as on the caseband that was the object of specific research and cutting to enable vertical positioning of the gems. The crown is also entirely invisible-set on both the edge and front, where the diamonds have been specifically cut to fit between the polished flanks of the Maltese cross. In all, this Traditionnelle tourbillon High Jewellery is adorned with more than 300 diamonds (~27.11 cts), resulting from exceptional gemsetting craftsmanship.
An ultra-thin tourbillon calibre
Paired with a dark grey alligator leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching, this watch measures 41 mm in diameter, making it suitable for all wrists, not least because it is so slim (12.46 mm). The latter is made possible by Calibre 2160, the first self-winding tourbillon movement developed by the Maison. In addition to the elegance of its openworked carriage shaped like the Manufacture’s Maltese cross emblem, Calibre 2160 is distinguished by its extreme slenderness: ultra-thin movement featuring a total of 188 components measures just 5.65 mm thick and has an 80-hour power reserve. The steady beating of its mechanism operating at the moderate frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) can be admired through the sapphire caseback, notably thanks to the peripheral 18K gold oscillating weight featuring a Clous de Paris hobnail guilloché pattern and serving to reduce the overall thickness.
The same quest for perfection has been applied to the finishing of the movement, with a circular-grained mainplate on the dial side and hand-bevelled bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève on the back. The gear train wheels are circular satin-finished, while the screws are chamfered and polished. Inspired by the Maison’s emblem, the tourbillon with its carriage bearing the small seconds indicated by a blackened screw features exceptional finishing lavished on all its components. One example is rounding off, which consists in filing the tourbillon bar to achieve a conical and semi-cylindrical shape, entirely hand-crafted to meet the criteria required by Vacheron Constantin.

A Fusion of Excellence and Innovation
Hublot was given a challenge: to create an incredibly light watch with a sustainable component. Known for pushing the boundaries in terms of research and development, Hublot was able to not only create a new material but a highly personal one at that. Hublot developed a composite made up of 25 HEAD racquets as well as 17 dark blue and 15 light blue Lacoste polos used by Djokovic during his 2023 season, the year in which the world witnessed Djokovic make history and break records with 24 Grand Slams singles titles.
These materials have been developed and used to make the watch as light as possible without losing any strength or resilience. In many ways, the R&D process for this watch mirrors Djokovic’s determination to aim for excellence.
The composite that makes up the case and bezel of the watch is made of Epoxy resin reinforced with quartz powder and glass veil that has been fused with the recycled racquets and shirts. The resulting material is speckled with fragments of light & dark blue textiles and black carbon to create a singular camo aesthetic. An innovative approach, representative of Hublot’s ambition for endless reinvention.
To ensure a feather-light feeling on the wrist, Hublot had to find a way to reduce the weight of the watch. Instead of using traditional sapphire crystal, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has chosen tempered Gorilla glass, a material used in high-end electronics and two times lighter than sapphire. An achievement made possible by the relentless drive of Hublot’s innovation and materials teams to create singular watches while pursuing the brand’s engagement to move towards meaningful products, made with awareness.
At the heart of the watch lies the Unico manufacture chronograph movement. Synonymous with the bold and always different character of the brand, the movement was a natural choice for this special piece. Nonetheless, the standard Unico movement in brass had to be reinvented to reduce the weight of the watch. To do so, Hublot chose aluminum, prized for its lightness, and anodized in light blue or grey to echo the camo color scheme of the case. In doing so, Hublot’s engineers were able to reduce the weight of the movement by 27%, shedding almost a third of its weight. Aluminum has also been used for some case components such as side pieces (3H-9H), sub-bezel, bezel lugs, pushers, crown and case-back.
The Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic comes with four straps for four different styles. The first bracelet is a “Lacoste” tennis wristband that attaches to the watch head with the One Click System, making the watch the perfect tennis companion. The second style is a blue elastic strap, this combination weighs a total of 49.5 grams, lighter than a tennis ball! The third style features a light blue Velcro strap with a polished blue aluminum sports buckle. The last style is a white rubber strap with titanium deployant buckle.
Highly Collectible
Fans of the tennis player and collectors alike will appreciate the details that have been added to the watch, such as a yellow second pusher or the slightly domed and curved bezel screws reminiscent of a tennis ball. The Novak Djokovic logo is visible on the second hand and on the oscillating weight.

Created entirely from oak, including its hinges, it is carved from mostly massive, traceable wood, whose sourcing and manufacture both promote short supply chains. Collective Horology and ZENITH come together once again to produce an exclusive limited edition of the DEFY Skyline, reinterpreting it as a holistic piece of 20th century industrial design with a “less is more” approach. For collectors, by collectors. What began in 2018 as a community centered around the development of collaborative watches has burgeoned into an established and reputed watch retailer focused on independent manufactures. In addition to its retail business, Collective continues to release collaborative watches and publishes one of the leading watch podcasts in the United States: Openwork: A Look Inside the Watch Industry. With a focus on customer service and experience, Collective Horology has reached watch aficionados around the world with its passion for independent watchmaking and its coveted collaborations. The very first of these projects was the ZENITH Chronomaster El Primero C.01 x Collective, a limited edition commissioned by the group with a sharp and minimalistic aesthetic. Now, for Collective’s tenth collaborative series, ZENITH was once again called upon to reimagine one of its modern icons in the making. Introducing the DEFY C.X Edition, a limited run of 200 pieces that completely reinterprets the staple model.
With its sharp architectural lines and unmistakable silhouette, the DEFY Skyline serves as a modern successor to the very first ZENITH DEFY wristwatch model from 1969, bringing its reputed ruggedness and durability into a much more contemporary design and equipped with the latest generation of the El Primero automatic manufacture movement. Exceptionally for the DEFY Skyline C.X Edition, the faceted steel case as well as the interchangeable integrated steel bracelet are given an entirely sandblasted matte finish, with just the side of the dodecagonal bezel in a polished finish. This is echoed by the polished side of the case back, mirroring the finish of the bezel’s edge. The result is bold yet understated, giving it an air of industrial design.
Continuing the theme of functional simplicity, the design as well as the layout of the dial have been redefined for the DEFY Skyline C.X Edition. In a matte silvery-grey colour, the DEFY Skyline’s signature starry sky pattern dial has been rendered more three-dimensional, with a gradient effect achieved by the four-pointed stars being engraved deeper in the centre and gradually shallower towards the outer edges of the dial. Instead of having the 1/10th of a second indicator – the only such complication in the world of watchmaking – at 9 o’clock, opposite the date window at 3 o’clock as in the standard DEFY Skyline models, the C.X Edition omits the date window completely and moves the 1/10th of a second counter to 6 o’clock for a more balanced and symmetrical look. The tip of the orange 1/10th of a second hand as well as the “10” mark are done in a highly legible orange tone, adding to the 20th century industrial design inspiration.
The DEFY Skyline C.X Edition is powered by a modified version of the El Primero 3620 automatic high- frequency calibre, visible through the sapphire display back. It features a 1/10th of a second indicator at 6 o’clock that’s driven directly by the 5Hz escapement. When fully wound, it provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours and is endowed with a stop-second mechanism for precise time-setting. Complementing the subtle orange accents on the dial, the DEFY Skyline Collective comes with an orange textured rubber strap with a steel folding clasp, in addition to the steel bracelet. They can be easily swapped without any tools using the case’s ingenious quick strap-change mechanism on the case back.
The DEFY Skyline C.X Edition is limited to a total of 200 pieces and is available exclusively through Collective Horology and the ZENITH online boutique. The watch will also be available in physical boutiques starting from December 19th.

The Les Cabinotiers Le Temps Divin (divine time) series explore the notion of time in its various cultural and conceptual perceptions: physical and linear like a chronology; astronomical and cyclical like the seasons; metaphysical in the infinite stretching of the present moment. For each of these interpretations, Vacheron Constantin offers a journey towards different cultural horizons, a horological odyssey punctuated by the mechanics of time and staged by artistic crafts. To embody cyclical time, composed of alternating astronomical phenomena, declines and rebirths, Vacheron Constantin has opted for the succession of seasons. Each of the latter is symbolised by a sacred animal from traditional Asian culture, highlighted by wood marquetry. The timepieces feature a tourbillon regulator driven by ultra-thin Calibre 2160.
Sacred animals to symbolise the four seasons
The rhythm of the seasons and years is of highly symbolic importance in Asian cultures, often associated with mythological creatures and the signs of the zodiac. Within such a cosmogony, the celestial ecliptic – the imaginary line corresponding to the visible movement of the Sun as seen from the Earth – is divided into four sections of seven constellations, each represented by its sacred animal: the Azure Dragon, symbol of strength and power for the East and spring; the Vermilion Bird, symbol of luck and prosperity for the South and summer; the White Tiger, symbol of seriousness and courage for the West and autumn; as well as the Black Tortoise, symbol of wisdom and longevity for the North and winter. These animals took shape under the marquetry artisan’s hand, inspired by the murals in the Kitora burial mound in Japan, a circular tomb dating from the 7th century CE and depicting these mythical animals.
A combination of decorative arts and mechanical engineering.
The marquetry artisan’s work involves using different types of wood in a variety of shades that are cut, organised, assembled and applied according to the motif to be created. The process involves 150 types of wood covering around 60 natural colours, sheets of veneer preserved at the right temperature and humidity. For these Les Cabinotiers timepieces, and depending on the dial, ten to 12 types were selected: sycamore, padauk, hornbeam, tulip tree, blue myrtle, eucalyptus, maple, burl wood, oak, walnut… some of which were stained or even heated to obtain the right colour.
The artisan begins by reproducing the motif on a scale four times the size of the dial. The lines must be clean and accurate before the design is reduced to its correct proportions and printed in as many copies as are needed for cutting. This is done on tracing paper for each of the pieces composing the marquetry, taking care to leave the perimeter clear. The next and most delicate stage consists of applying these tracings to a stack of ten or so layers of veneer, each 0.6 mm thick, sawn in one piece to facilitate cutting. The operation is performed using a pedal-operated scroll saw, the aim being to divide the tenth-of-a-millimetre design line into two. Finally, the delicately sanded and sometimes previously heated or tinted components are assembled like a jigsaw puzzle. At this stage, they are no more than 0.4 mm thick and, in some cases, not much wider. They are then glued to the final substrate before being sanded down to level and varnished.
This to the millimetre-accurate wood marquetry is even more complex in that it often requires a very large number of components, averaging more than 200 tiny parts from eight to ten different species for each dial. Making a dragon, for example, requires a piece of wood for each of its scales.
In all, it takes a month and a half to make a single dial.
The slim case of the four models is the result of ultra-thin Calibre 2160, measuring 5.65mm thick. Operating at a rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour, it offers an 80-hour power reserve by a winding mechanism coupled to a peripheral rotor. This open architecture of the 188-component movement reveals the level of finishing applied to this High Watchmaking mechanism, with a circular-grained plate on the dial side and hand-bevelled bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève on the back. The gear train wheels are circular satin-finished, the screws chamfered and polished, while the tourbillon bar with its Maltese cross-shaped carriage bearing the small seconds indicated by a blackened screw is delicately rounded off by hand.

Over the last three weeks, some 2.5 million people have flocked to Les Sables d’Olonne to admire the spectacular boats and salute the solo sailors who are preparing to take on this incredible journey around the globe. This record turnout, four years on from the previous edition which had to be held without spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is set to be repeated on Sunday for the legendary pass down the Les Sables d’Olonne channel!

Almost 1000 days ago, the young Swiss sailor knocked on Hublot’s door to share his project and his desire to take on the “Everest of the Seas”. His fighting spirit, passion, daring and enthusiasm immediately won over the legendary manufacture.

This is a philosophy shared by the most experienced sailor of his generation, finisher of two Vendée Globe races, and holder of the North Atlantic record. “In Switzerland, we all have a certain idea of what constitutes performance, precision and commitment. I’m not someone to rest on my laurels. Taking too much for granted is a sure path to failure. I want to push the envelope even further; to surpass others, but above all to surpass my own limits”.

The time trial has officially begun for Alan Roura, who now has some 45,000 kilometres ahead of him. Leaving the legendary Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn in his wake, Alan Roura will have to dig deep to complete this extraordinary challenge, without assistance or stopovers, a feat only 200 sailors have managed since the event was created 35 years ago!
Along the way, the sailor will undoubtedly have to face many trials and tribulations, but Alan Roura knows he can count on the unfailing support of his partners in this 100% Swiss project, with the entire nation behind him, supporting their countryman. “My wish for this Vendée Globe is to be able to share my joy at being at sea with my team, my partners and all the Swiss people who are following me. Yes, there will be difficulties, ups and downs, twists of fate. That’s part of the game. But I want to concentrate on the positive, and show that the Vendée Globe is above all a fantastic human adventure!”

Hublot is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1980 and based in Nyon. A fragment of the Jbilet Winselwan meteorite majestically dominates the upper part of the STARMAN’s dial and competes visually with the tourbillon. This beautiful black stone, spangled with little brown dots, was discovered in the western Sahara Desert. It bears amino acids and is thus a silent witness to the first sparks of life spread throughout the cosmos.
The STARMAN dial: a highly complex construction
The STARMAN’s dial is a genuine feat of artistic and technical prowess. Let’s begin with the base cut from the Gibeon meteorite, which fell to earth in prehistoric times and is famous for its emblematic Widmanstätten pattern. The fragment was dyed in a deep blue using an intricate – and secret –process. A second disc made of sapphire crystal features a map of the stars. In the foreground are the constellations carefully painted by hand using a luminescent material. They appear on the backdrop of the map’s longitudinal and latitudinal lines.
At night, the STARMAN reveals a magnificent stellar panorama, creating an appearance of depth that draws us into the immensity of the universe itself. This nightly display is enhanced by the vibrant blue hands and indexes that provide a touch of technical elegance to this exceptional timepiece.
The solar map and its riddle
Turn the STARMAN around, you will find a fascinating chart of the solar system. The planets, some of which only measure two millimetres in diameter, have been meticulously painted by hand and placed on a grid that seems to float over a star-lit sky.
The ultimate secret, however, is this: The planets have been precisely positioned as they appeared on March 21, 2013, when the world of watchmaking was stunned by an amazing revelation: Louis Moinet was the inventor of the chronograph. The public event was held at the Neuchâtel observatory, where Jean-Marie Schaller unveiled the famous compteur de tierces, which had been built by the great French watchmaker in 1816.
The art of horology
The STARMAN defies gravity in a riveting manner thanks to its flying tourbillon in an off-centre cage. The hand-wound movement is equipped with two barrels in parallel. The system, called “volte face,” has one of the barrels turned upside-down or head-to-tail, so they deliver their energy simultaneously, producing a power reserve of ninety-six hours.
It comes in an 18-carat gold case with a diameter of 47.4 millimetres. Its architecture is opulent and complex, mixing brushed and polished surfaces and a stepped bezel that gives it a unique character.
The STARMAN is available in two editions limited to twelve pieces each, one in 18-carat red gold, the other in 18-carat grey gold.
In creating this timepiece, Jean-Marie Schaller delved into the mysteries of the cosmos. It’s a spirited homage to Louis Moinet, a man whose spirit of innovation and exploration is destined to continue resonating into the future.

Extreme in both form and function. The DEFY Extreme Diver is the latest in a long line of purpose-built DEFY watches, going as far back as 1969. As a collection designed to brave the elements andoffer exemplary robustness and ruggedness, a diver’s watch was always a natural extension ofZENITH’s most daring line. Maintaining the DEFY’s distinctive design with its signature angular case and faceted bezel, ZENITH incorporated all the necessary elements to create a diver’s watch, including a rotating bezel and bright colour accents for instant readability underwater and the most extreme conditions where visibility is limited. Inspired by both historical DEFY diver’s references as well as the modern incarnation of the DEFY line, notably the DEFY Extreme, the DEFY Extreme Diver is a feature-packed diver’s watch that is inherently a ZENITH DEFY, built to withstand the extreme conditions encountered in the harshest environments where ice, mist and deep dark waters call for enhanced performance and legibility.
With a singular yet familiar and modernistic silhouette, this DEFY Extreme Diver’s highly intricate case design serves to enhance its depth-defying performance. Measuring 42.5mm in diameter, the angular case is crafted in titanium, a metal that not only boasts a significant weight-to-strength ratio but is also highly resistant to corrosion from salty seawater. The case is equipped with a helium escape valve for saturation diving. Above the fixed dodecagonal bezel, the black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel features grooved edges for a better grip when operating – even with gloves on. The bezel is engraved and filled with Super-LumiNova for effortless reading underwater where light is scarce.
Designed to be tightly secured in place but with enough grip to easily operate, the oversized screw- down crown is protected by titanium crown-guards on either side. Just like the historical DEFY A3648 from 1969, the DEFY Extreme Diver is rated to 600 metres (60 ATM) of water- resistance, which happens to be 1’969 feet – a symbolic number for the DEFY diver. It not only meets the ISO 6245 standards for diver watches, which includes ISO 764 for paramagnetism and ISO 1413 for shock-resistance, making it a comprehensive diver’s watch suited to the most demanding conditions.
Something of a signature in the contemporary DEFY line, the dial features a geometric pattern of engraved four-pointed stars, a symbol that first appeared on the DEFY models on the case back and crown in 1969. Specially for this new DEFY Extreme Diver, the dial is done in a silvery-white tone, with sunburst finish featuring rays emanating from the applied ZENITH star at 12 o’clock. The date at 3 o’clock is colour-matched to the dial.
Keeping readability in mind, the DEFY Extreme Diver’s dial is set with oversized hands and applied hour markers that feature three different pigments of “X1” grade Super-LumiNova, with light emissions in blue, green and yellow. This light display helps to instantly distinguish between the hours, minutes, and seconds. The bright orange accents are a nod to historical DEFY diver models, from a time when it was believed that bright orange was the most highly legible colour underwater.
The DEFY Extreme Diver is powered by the El Primero 3620-SC automatic high-frequency manufacture calibre with 60 hours power reserve, visible through a sapphire display back – an uncommon feature among diver’s watches. This version of El Primero features a paramagnetic escapement with key components in non-metallic silicon.
Completing the DEFY Extreme Diver is its titanium three-link bracelet as well as two supplied straps. The first additional strap is a black FKM rubber with a Cordura-effect texture that features vents on the side, allowing water to pass through. For more professional uses, the DEFY Extreme Diver also comes with an extra-long strap, made of recycled fishing nets, that’s meant to be worn over a wetsuit, with specific end-pieces to pass the single-piece strap through and under the case for a secure fit.

Hakim El Kadiri, the founder of Elka Watch, has expanded his horizons with the launch of Loch Lat, a meticulously crafted single malt whisky. This new venture, born out of a passion for both timekeeping and spirits, reflects El Kadiri’s dedication to quality and innovation.
Loch Lat is the culmination of a three-year journey that began with a casual inspiration. Inspired by a Belgian friend’s gift of a fine whisky, El Kadiri was captivated by the spirit’s unique character and set out to create a Neuchâtel-based counterpart.
Partnering with experienced oenologist, El Kadiri carefully selected the finest malt must and oversaw the distillation process. The spirit was then aged in repurposed cognac casks, imparting a rich and complex flavor profile.

A new era in watchmaking
In 1971, Girard-Perregaux launched Switzerland’s first serially produced quartz watch. Its frequency of 32,768 Hz was set by the Manufacture and subsequently adopted as the universal standard for quartz watches. A battery within the watch transmitted an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, creating vibrations that would ultimately orchestrate the display of time. During this period, quartz was widely considered as the future owing to its notable precision.
A year or two later, LED displays emerged, with both computer and watch brands embracing what was considered at the time to be state-of-the-art technology. The hour and minute hands found on traditional mechanical watches were supplanted by bright red Arabic numerals, often brought to life with the press of a pusher. Interestingly, these early LED displays were often housed in a conventionally shaped round watch case and occupied only a small proportion of the dial area available.
Everything changed in 1976 when Girard-Perregaux unveiled a surprising new model that would later be known as the ‘Casquette’. Launched at a time when the world was obsessed with sci-fi blockbusters, the model’s futuristic looks and sharp design were aligned with the widespread public interest for spaceships and time travel. Its contemporary tubular display powered by an in-house quartz calibre and distinctive streamlined case seemed otherworldly and revolutionary. Like the Laureato, the name ‘Casquette’ was a soubriquet conceived by the watch collecting community and was officially adopted by the Maison.
The Casquette returns to the delight of GP lovers
Since its inception, Girard-Perregaux has continuously engaged with watch collectors, on some occasions making bespoke timepieces to satisfy an individual’s personal requirements. It is this approach that is deep-rooted in the brand’s philosophy; a mission to deliver joy through its timepieces, making the customer the focus of everything the Manufacture does. The company often meets collectors in person during events or Manufacture visits and actively engages with its community via social media channels.
In 2022, having received numerous requests from its community, Girard-Perregaux released a new Casquette, the aptly named Casquette 2.0. A revival of the collectors’ favourite from the 70s, closely resembling the original watch of 1976, the Casquette 2.0 incorporated some subtle changes and several useful enhancements. Housed in a black ceramic and titanium case, featuring titanium pushers, the model bore a strong resemblance to the Macrolon-clad original, the undisputed icon of the 70s. Widely considered the cool kids’ watch, the Casquette 2.0 proved a box office sensation.
Dedicated to GP’s community
Mindful of the widespread affection for the Casquette watch among GP’s community, the Manufacture has now created a new variant of the model. Born in 1976, the inaugural Casquette was offered in three case variants: Macrolon, gold plated and steel. This latest model is presented in a Grade 5 titanium case and features 18K 2N yellow gold GP logo and pushers, a nod to its gold plated and steel forbears of the 70s. Reborn in 2024, this latest iteration of the Casquette 2.0 comes supplied on a matching Grade 5 titanium bracelet with a rubber lining, conferring exceptional wearer comfort. The titanium buckle is equipped with a micro adjustment, allowing the wearer to fine tune the sizing of the bracelet to ensure a perfect fit. This latest reference will be the ultimate limited edition with a production run of 820 pieces and, as everyone knows ‘all good things must come to an end’.
The Casquette 2.0 is equipped with the Calibre GP03980, providing additional functions not found on the original model. Indeed, as well as displaying the hours, minutes, seconds, day and date, just like the original, the Casquette 2.0 with its vintage LED display also indicates the month, year, chronograph, second time zone and a secret date. Incidentally, the Calibre GP03980 can be retrofitted to the first generation models from 1976, sidestepping obsolescence and making the Casquette one of the oldest serviceable quartz watches around today. Indeed, Girard-Perregaux never loses sight of its community, continuously looking at ways to deliver joy and customer delight.
