Angelus boasts an illustrious and distinguished history in the realm of watchmaking. Their pioneering, in-house-created movements and timepieces have been universally acclaimed by connoisseurs and collectors alike. With a rich legacy dating back to 1891 in Switzerland, Angelus remains a major contender in the industry today. Their collection seamlessly blends vintage high watchmaking with contemporary design and materials, resulting in truly awe-inspiring timepieces. Furthermore, Angelus possesses the full capability to design, produce, finish, assemble, regulate, and test all its movements and timepieces in-house. It’s no surprise that Angelus watches continue to be highly coveted by collectors worldwide. 

The brand has also made several breakthroughs, such as the Chronodato (1942), which was the first series wristwatch chronograph with a calendar. The Chrono-Datoluxe (1948) had the first big date in a chronograph wristwatch, while the Datalarm (1956) was the first wristwatch to feature both alarm and date functions. Finally, Tinkler (1958) was the first automatic repeater and the first fully waterproof repeater, and it is still considered a cult timepiece today.

This year at the Watches and Wonders, Angelus introduced four novelties.

Chronographe Médical

In the 1960s, Angelus launched its “doctor’s watch”: a wrist-worn hand-wound chronograph with a unique dial. It presented a dual scale for reading the vital signs doctors need during patient examinations: a pulsometer – to measure the patient’s pulse – and an asthmometer – to record their respiratory rate. This rare piece, which follows the 1950s and 1960s trend of specialising chronographs to meet specific functional or professional requirements, has been brought up to date by Angelus to appeal to modern tastes.

In consultation with William Massena, founder of Massena LAB, Angelus is releasing a limited edition of 99 pieces of the Chronographe Médical x Massena LAB. The case is made from 316L steel, and its diameter has been increased to 39 mm to make the pulsometer scale more legible. The functions and how they are presented on the dial remain unrivalled. Not only has the combination of pulsometer and asthmometer remained unique, but its display is also one of a kind. First and foremost, the pulsometer has a very specific colour code: green, black, or red, corresponding to the severity of the reading obtained during the examination. By contrast, the respiratory scale is red and is nestled inside the minute circle. These two scales are positioned so as to make them as legible and clear as possible.

Inside the Chronographe Médical x Massena LAB, Angelus has incorporated a very specific version of its A5000 calibre. It displays the small seconds at 9 o’clock and only the chronograph seconds hand – the only one needed to use the medical scales. With no 30-minute counter, this calibre is dedicated to diagnosis. This version is presented with a single mushroom-shaped pusher at 2 o’clock. Operating at a rate of 3 Hz, it incorporates a column wheel and a horizontal clutch.

Chronodate Gold black

Chronodate Gold boasts a 42.5 mm case that continues the neo-retro spirit of this sporty chronograph. The movement is housed in a container machined from a carbon-fibre composite. Around this container, Angelus has designed an attachment system consisting of an open-worked cradle that brings the case middle and lugs into a single line, made of 5N red gold.

Angelus has chosen to give the Chronodate imposing counters that offer optimal readability. The counters are set on a deep-black dial fittingly described as “velvet black”, punctuated with large applied Arabic numerals with Super-LumiNova.

Inside, Angelus has installed its calibre A-500 displaying the small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock. Encircling the dial, a hand sweeps over the peripheral date display. Oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz, the calibre incorporates a column wheel. It operates via a self-winding system with an oscillating weight in 5N red gold shaped like a capital letter “A” above a star – Angelus’ emblem—a reference to the early days of Angelus right at the heart of the mechanism.

Chronodate Titanium green

Chronodate Titanium boasts a 42.5 mm case that continues the neo-retro spirit of this sporty chronograph. The movement is housed in a container machined from a carbon-fibre composite. Around this container, Angelus has designed an attachment system consisting of an open-worked cradle that brings the case middle and lugs into a single line made of titanium.

The carbon-fibre composite container houses the movement, which is held in place by an attachment system consisting of an open-worked cradle made of titanium. The watch also features imposing counters that offer optimal readability, set on a deep-black dial with large applied Arabic numerals that glow in the dark. The calibre A-500 inside the timepiece displays the small seconds and a 30-minute chronograph counter while a hand sweeps over the peripheral date display. The oscillating frequency is 4 Hz, and the watch incorporates a column wheel and operates via a self-winding system with an oscillating weight in tungsten shaped like a capital letter “A” above a star. This watch is a true masterpiece that pays homage to the early days of Angelus.
