Ressence TYPE 3 BB2 Time magic through liquid precision

Meet the TYPE 3 BB2, awarded the ‘Best of the Best’ distinction in the Red Dot Design Award 2024 – think of it as the Oscars for product design.
This black edition further accentuates the hyper-minimal look of the TYPE 3, as the combination of oil and dark hue makes the thin space between the discs invisible. Whenever the dial gets in motion, wonder occurs.

“An almost pitch-black TYPE 3 edition truly showcases the magic of our flush rotating discs, acting like a mechanical screen, tricking the viewer’s senses and provoking wonder.” says Benoît Mintiens, Founder of Ressence.

The TYPE 3 Black Black 2 complements the TYPE 3 Black, White and Eucalyptus Green. It is available worldwide immediately, via Ressence’s official retailer network.

Strong graphic appeal

With its distinctive edge-to-edge, front and back, sapphire crystal, evoking a sleek dark pebble, this new addition holds a bold and captivating design.

Drawing on the limited 2022 TYPE 3 BBB’s reduced colour palette, the TYPE 3 Black Black 2 features mostly white and light grey inscriptions on its dial, accented by touches of primary colour tones on weekends and oil temperature indications.

The TYPE 3 BB2 also presents a matt black DLC-coated titanium case, departing from its exclusive predecessor and creating subtle contrast against the glossy sapphire.

Augmented readability

When launched in 2013, the TYPE 3 took the watch industry by surprise as the first ever oil-filled mechanical watch. The TYPE 3 cancels out the distortion caused by the refraction of light, ensuring exceptional readability from any angle. To achieve this result, the upper chamber has been flooded with 3.57 ml of oil, creating a magnified projection effect that gives the illusion of information displayed directly on the glass.

The TYPE 3 also remains easy to read, regardless of the lighting conditions, thanks to the filling of engraved indications with Grade A Super-LumiNova®.

Bellows system

While the oil provides high legibility, it is also sensitive to temperature variations. To compensate for the oil’s expansion or contraction under varying thermal conditions, Ressence has developed a Bellows System. It is a self-equilibrating pressure-balance system that maintains an even pressure and prevents any negative impact on performance. This Bellows System is graphically represented by a temperature gauge on the dial, adding a unique visual element to both the TYPE 3 and the TYPE 5.

Rooted in design culture

Ressence embraces a ‘Less is More’ approach, crafting meaningful mechanical watches where every design choice serves a function. Designed to be worn and enjoyed, these watches are becoming an integral part of the wearer’s journey.

ABOUT RESSENCE

Founded by industrial designer Benoît Mintiens in 2010, Ressence is redefining the essence of contemporary watchmaking. From the start, we have taken on a “Less is More” approach, stripping away unnecessary attributes that traditional watches have clung to for decades.
Combining Swiss-made calibres with our own innovations, we reimagine the interaction between mechanical watches and their owners. Our minimalistic designs aim to awaken the senses and provoke wonder, making our watches daily companions for today’s and future generations.
It all began with the Zero Series, featuring a revolutionary dial design where time is represented on flush two-dimensional rotating discs. Gone are the traditional hands. Time reads like words on paper. This hallmark of simplicity continued with the TYPE 1, which got rid of the crown, resulting a truly ambidextrous watch. The TYPE 3 pushed boundaries further with its oil-filled dial, eliminating refraction and enhancing legibility. This watch earned us the 2013 Horological Revelation Award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The TYPE 2 introduced the world’s first automatic self-setting crown, removing the need for manual adjustments. Our latest, the TYPE 8, stands as the most essential and graphically simplified Ressence, displaying only hours and minutes.

History

From its founding by master watchmaker Abraham Favre in 1737 to pioneering innovations like the Bivouac and Bathy, Favre Leuba’s history is a testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence. Each era has seen the brand push boundaries through groundbreaking collaborations with legendary figures like Breguet or by creating timepieces favored by explorers and adventurers.

1700s – Origins: The journey of Favre Leuba began with Abraham Favre, a master watchmaker devoted to his craft. In 1792, his son Frédéric joined him, and the workshop was officially incorporated as ‘A. Favre & Fils.’ Innovation became their hallmark, leading to the brand’s partnership with Auguste Leuba in 1815, marking the birth of Favre Leuba.

1800s – Expansion: In the 19th century, under Fritz Favre’s leadership, the company expanded internationally, exporting watches to India, China, and the Americas. Favre Leuba watches, known for their quality, robustness, and precision, became highly sought after by explorers and adventurers.

1900s – Innovations: Favre Leuba has never ceased to innovate throughout its history. Notable achievements include the 1962 launch of the Bivouac, the world’s first wristwatch with an aneroid barometer, and the 1968 launch of the Bathy, a watch with a mechanical depth gauge for divers. Despite facing challenges during the quartz crisis, the brand’s heritage and craftsmanship remained intact.

2000s – Transformation: Favre Leuba returned to the watchmaking scene in 2007 with the Mercury Collection. In 2017, they introduced the Raider Bivouac 9000, a watch that measures altitude up to 9000 meters mechanically, earning accolades and setting records. In 2024, Favre Leuba begins a fresh chapter with three new collections presented at Geneva Watch Days.

Timeline

Adventures in Style

Favre Leuba has always embraced boldness, exploring a wide range of styles. The new collections draw from the brand’s rich history, with vintage pieces serving as inspiration. ZENITH AND CONTEMPORARY ARTIST FELIPE PANTONE UNVEIL A SPECIAL EDITION OF THE DEFY SKYLINE TOURBILLON

LIGHTS, COLOURS, MOTION: ZENITH AND CONTEMPORARY ARTIST FELIPE PANTONE UNVEIL A SPECIAL EDITION OF THE DEFY SKYLINE TOURBILLON, MARKING THE PAIR’S THIRD COLLABORATIVE SERIES

The worlds of contemporary art and haute horlogerie are colliding again in a burst of chromatics and optical intricacies. For their third collaborative series together between Switzerland’s first integrated watch manufacture and the globally acclaimed contemporary artist, ZENITH and Felipe Pantone are once again raising the bar and distilling all the distinctive and groundbreaking elements incorporated in their shared projects into an all-new form. Unveiling the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone, a limited edition of 100 pieces available from September 12, 2024.

Contemporary art and cutting-edge watchmaking coming seamlessly together. After having worked on the historical Manufacture’s façade with a specifically designed tarpaulin in 2020, ZENITH and Valencia-based optical artist Felipe Pantone have gone on to unveil numerous watch projects: a limited-edition series of the DEFY 21 that was instantly sold out in 2021, a unique rendition of the DEFY 21 Double Tourbillon in a sapphire case that set an all-time record for ZENITH at the OnlyWatch 2021 charity auction, and a highly anticipated sequel series in 2022 with the DEFY Extreme Felipe Pantone. Now, the two are taking their ongoing collaboration where it hasn’t gone before. This time, the artist’s canvas is the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon, marking his first reimagining of a DEFY Skyline model. The result is both highly compact and versatile yet packed with intricate and original details that have come to define the ongoing collaboration between ZENITH and Felipe Pantone.

On the latest chapter of the artist’s creative output with ZENITH, Felipe Pantone shared, “I’m excited to unveil my latest collaboration with Zenith, our most exceptional watch to date. It’s a masterpiece of high horology, combining simplicity and sophistication. This complex yet minimalist timepiece features stunning details, including the tiny gradient indexes and hands, the mirror ‘Planned Iridescence’ dial and a truly unique bolt shaped tourbillon.”

Crafted in a 41mm octagonal stainless-steel case, the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone provides a highly geometric and angular silhouette frame to the miniature, kinetic artwork within. With its alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes as well as an easily interchangeable steel bracelet and provided black rubber strap, particular attention was paid to the ergonomics of this unisex creation as well as its visual impact. Its sharp facets and smoothly polished contours, highlight by the dodecagonal bezel, provide the ultimate play of light. In continuity with the previous ZENITH X Felipe Pantone projects, the case is engraved on each corner with a character to denote “FPT1”, or Felipe Pantone Tourbillon #1.

Upon a first glance, the central element of the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone immediately catches the eye. Completing one rotation every 60 seconds, the tourbillon mechanism visible through the opening at 6 o’clock keeps the watch always animated. Specifically for this special collaborative edition, the tourbillon bridge takes on the shape of a lightning bolt, a recurring element in Felipe Pantone’s extensive body of work across different media. Finished in a gradient of metallic rainbow tones that was originally pioneered in the duo’s first collaborative output in 2021, the 3D PVD technique on the tourbillon bridge and cage in the form of a four-pointed star further highlights the artist’s distinctive aesthetic.

Different to what previous ZENITH X Felipe Pantone creations have featured, the entire dial is iridescent in the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone. Crafted from a sapphire disk, the dial features a micro-engraved pattern of concentric circles, recalling the moiré visual effect ever so present in Pantone’s artwork. The back of the sapphire dial features a mirrored metallic finish that, combined with the micro-engraving, produces a striking display of colours in a manner that’s reminiscent of a CD. To add even more depth to the dial and bring out a touch of retro nostalgia, the sapphire dial disk packs a vignette effect that darkens towards the outer edges. The combination of sapphire crystal with a mirrored back, a micro-engraving pattern and a vignette effect is a highly complex and unprecedented feat – both technically and visually.

The hands and applied hour markers are no less complex and captivating. In Felipe Pantone’s signature style of visual distortion, the hands as well as the hour markers (except the cardinal “crosshair” markers at 3, 9, and 12 o’clock) are distorted down the middle, like some kind of graphical glitch. Matching the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, the hands and markers are finished in a gradient of rainbow tones.

Powered by the El Primero 3630 high-frequency automatic manufacture movement with a power reserve of 60 hours, the DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone incorporates the artist’s chromatic signature touch even on the movement, in the form of a star-shaped oscillating weight with a rainbow PVD finish matching the tourbillon cage and bridge as well as the other metallic elements on the dial side.

Completing the latest chapter in the ZENITH X Felipe Pantone collaboration is a customized watch box, with an iridescent pattern on the interior as well as the outer box designed by the artist in his inimitable style.

The DEFY Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone is a limited-edition of 100 pieces that will be available from ZENITH online and physical boutiques, as well as with select retailers, worldwide from September 12 at 14:00 CEST.

ZENITH: TIME TO REACH YOUR STAR.

ZENITH exists to inspire individuals to pursue their dreams and make them come true – against all odds. Since its establishment in 1865, ZENITH became the first vertically integrated Swiss watch manufacture, and its watches have accompanied extraordinary figures that dreamt big and strived to achieve the impossible – from Louis Blériot’s history-making flight across the English Channel to Felix Baumgartner’s record-setting stratospheric free-fall jump. Zenith is also highlighting visionary and trailblazing women by celebrating their accomplishments and creating the DREAMHERS platform where women share their experiences and inspire others to fulfil their dreams.

With innovation as its guiding star, ZENITH exclusively features in-house developed and manufactured movements in all its watches. Since the creation of the El Primero in 1969, the world’s first automatic chronograph calibre, ZENITH has gone on to master high-frequency precision and offers time measurements in fractions of a second, including 1/10th of a second in the Chronomaster collection and 1/100th of a second in the DEFY collection. Because innovation is synonymous with responsibility, the ZENITH HORIZ-ON initiative affirms the brand’s commitments to inclusion & diversity, sustainability and employee wellbeing. ZENITH has been shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking since 1865, accompanying those who dare to challenge themselves and reach new heights. The time to reach your star is now.

ABOUT FELIPE PANTONE.

Felipe Pantone is an Argentinian-Spanish artist. He started doing graffiti at the age of 12. He graduated with a Fine Art degree in Valencia (Spain) where his studio is based. Pantone’s work deals with dynamism, transformation, digital revolution, and themes related to the present times.

Felipe Pantone evokes a spirit in his work that feels like a collision between an analog past and a digitized future, where human beings and machines will inevitably glitch alongside one another in a prism of neon gradients, geometric shapes, optical patterns, and jagged grids. Based in Spain, Pantone is a byproduct of the technological age when kids unlocked life’s mysteries through the Internet. As a result of this prolonged screen time, he explores how the displacement of the light spectrum impacts colour and repetition.

“Colour only happens because of light, and light is the only reason why life happens,” Pantone says. “Light and colour are the very essence of visual art. Thanks to television, computers, and modern lighting, our perception of light and colour has changed completely.”

For Pantone, his art is a meditation on the ways we consume visual information. Drawing inspiration from kinetic artist like Victor Vasarely and Carlos Cruz-Diez — who both utilized the moiré effect (in which lines of contrasting colour give the impression of movement) — his contemporary work produces the sensation of vibration as the viewer’s position changes in relation to the work.

To achieve the desired effect, Pantone utilizes modeling software which allows for 3D insights into a project, which then can be translated into frescoes, murals, paintings, and sculptures which give tactile merit to what is occurring in the digital world.

“I grew up as a simple painter, trained as a painter, and now my biggest goal is to get clear of all the academic training and to be able to make art freely, with the tools that work best,” he says.

Whether it’s exhibiting in galleries around the world, transforming a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette into something futuristic, or painting the largest mural in Portugal, Pantone’s diverse applications are united by the intersection of technology and fine art.

“I try to create things that are not supposed to be where they are,” he says. “To bring awareness of certain things, to move people’s thoughts elsewhere.”

HUBLOT’S HOMAGE TO HAWAIʻI: THE BIG BANG UNICO ʻO KA MUA

Hublot’s ethos of the Art of Fusion celebrates tradition and innovation, a philosophy beautifully embodied in a new limited-edition timepiece designed exclusively for Hawaiʻi. The name ‘O Ka Mua means “the first,” as Hublot has created the first limited edition timepiece for the Hublot Honolulu Ala Moana boutique.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Big Bang Unico ‘O Ka Mua embodies the essence of Hawaiʻi through its Polynesian design elements and the natural beauty of the islands. With the Hawaiian Islands intricately embedded on the case back of the watch, the dial consists of concentric patterns that feature designs inspired by its nature. The central sun, a key symbol in Polynesian culture, is framed by designs reminiscent of turtles, weaving patterns, waves, and shark teeth—emblems that pay homage to Polynesian artistry. Hublot’s cutting-edge materials and watchmaking expertise bring these cultural symbols to life. The honu (turtle) symbolizes longevity and peace, the shark’s teeth represent adaptability, protection, and guidance, and the waves symbolize life, change, and the unknown. This unique combination pays homage to Polynesia’s aesthetic heritage and crafts a meaningful masterpiece that resonates deeply with the spirit of Hawaiʻi.

Powered by Hublot’s iconic UNICO movement, an emblem of the Maison’s watchmaking mastery, is the driving force behind this exquisite timepiece. The in-house automatic chronograph caliber, features the column wheel and dual-clutch mechanism on the dial side, ensuring unmatched precision and reliability. With a 72- hour power reserve and silicon components in its escapement to minimize friction, the UNICO movement delivers enhanced performance. Its modular design not only support a variety of complications but also accommodates custom enhancements, making it a versatile and revolutionary element of Hublot’s distinguished watch collection. More than an engineering feat, this movement is a tribute to Hublot’s savoir- faire and seamlessly blends Polynesian motifs with Swiss watchmaking excellence.

Each limited-edition timepiece is accompanied by two interchangeable straps: Hublot’s classic black lined rubber strap and a versatile calf leather strap artfully embossed with motifs reflecting the watch’s Polynesian-inspired dial and case design, offering both style and functionality for every occasion. This Hawaiʻi exclusive marks the opening of the Hublot Honolulu Ala Moana boutique in 2021 and is limited to 25 pieces, melding fine craftsmanship with rich Hawaiian culture.”

THE GREENBOX CASE

The Big Bang ‘O Ka Mua is presented in Hublot’s Greenbox Case with the design of the timepiece etched on top. This newly launched box, developed for use within all current Hublot watch collections, is a testament to Hublot’s commitment to sustainability. The unique case, including its hinges, is crafted entirely from oak and is carved from mostly massive, traceable wood, promoting short supply chains and responsible sourcing. It is designed to be a reusable item, with 98 percent of its removable interior made from eco-friendly and recycled components. The case is made from recycled fabrics, plastic yarns, PET, and recycled paper and cardboard that are eco-labeled, making it a smart choice for the environmentally aware consumer.

HUBLOT

Hublot is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1980 and based in Nyon. For its first ever timepiece, this fundamentally disruptive company combined gold with a rubber strap in a case with a design inspired by a ship’s porthole (hublot in French). Thus, the Art of Fusion was born, blending tradition, innovation, craftsmanship, worlds and talents. It became the brand’s aesthetic and technical signature.

This identity was strengthened in 2005 with the Big Bang, which attested to an unrivalled know-how in terms of complications, manufacture movements and state-of-the-art materials. Carbon, titanium, ceramic and sapphire have been developed on this model to technical extremes.

This ground-breaking, high-quality approach to watchmaking is summed up in its philosophy ‘Be First, Unique and Different.’ It gradually led to other collections with innovative designs: Classic Fusion, Shaped Collection (Spirit of Big Bang, Square Bang) and Manufacture Pieces. These draw on high levels of craftsmanship, both in terms of the materials so dear to Hublot (such as Magic Gold, brightly-coloured ceramics and sapphires) and its manufacture movements (Unico chronograph, Meca-10 and high complications such as the Tourbillon, the Cathedral Minute Repeater and the specific Manufacture Pieces movements).

Hublot’s world extends to powerful partnerships including football. ‘Hublot Loves Football’ has become the slogan at the world’s biggest sporting events (such as the FIFA World CupTM, Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA EUROTM) and through its ambassadors. This love of football continues in art, design, music, sport, fine dining and sailing. Lastly, Hublot’s implication in joint environmental projects with SORAI and Polar Pod reflects its concern for the issues of the day.

Over 135 boutiques around the world share Hublot’s fervour and values, alongside the Hublot.com e-commerce site.

COMMEMORATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENT IN THE NEW LIMITED EDITION ENDURANCE PRO IRONMAN

The new 500-piece limited edition IRONMAN-branded Endurance Performance Pro is Breitling’s ultralight sports watch to mark the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship triathlons, available only at Breitling.com and select Breitling boutiques and retailers.

What keeps you going when you are pushing yourself to your absolute limits? You have the strength and motivation, but you need the time to realize your inspirational fitness goals. With the Endurance Pro IRONMAN®, you have the toughest tool to keep you on track and take you beyond the breaking point of mere ambition.

The IRONMAN triathlon is one of the most famous single-day endurance races on the planet and is known for being a true test of heart, body, and soul. It begins before the gun goes off, with months and maybe even years of training. Breitling, the Swiss luxury watchmaker that has built timepieces since 1884 as rugged as the individuals who wear them, has been the official luxury watch partner of the IRONMAN triathlon since 2021.

The Endurance Pro IRONMAN marks the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Nice, France, on September 22, 2024 (women), and Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, on October 26, 2024 (men). It is the ultimate in racing for extreme athletes. The VinFast IRONMAN World Championship is the culmination of all the global IRONMAN triathlon events, which see professional and age-group athletes alike compete for a qualifying slot in the pinnacle race on the long-distance triathlon calendar.

As part of this active partnership, Breitling is introducing a limited-edition Endurance Pro IRONMAN with a case made of lightweight titanium and the race’s uniquely inspired logo featured at 6 o’clock.

The rejuvenated IRONMAN logo reflects renewal and resilience, inspired by this year’s theme for the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship – “new life”, or “‘Ola Hou” in Hawaiian. The ama‘u plant above the M symbolizes resilience and new life and recalls the IRONMAN competitors’ fierce focus on achievement. The ferns and lavender on both the M and the dot are a fusion of Hawai‘i’s lush vegetation and the calming lavender of the fields of southern France.

This limited edition of 500 pieces comes on a blue rubber strap for maximum performance and durability and has the IRONMAN logo on the caseback.

“The spirit of the IRONMAN competition has much in common with the high-caliber precision and ruggedness of Breitling,” says CEO Georges Kern.

“This watch was designed for the most arduous journeys and difficult physical challenges.”

“The will and strength to compete in an IRONMAN triathlon is worth commemorating as it reminds us of what we are capable of when we test limits and set out to achieve an ambitious goal,” adds Kern.

The limited-edition Endurance Pro IRONMAN is available only at Breitling.com and select Breitling boutiques and retailers.

DESIGNED FOR PERFORMANCE

Made of titanium, a robust material 2.2 times lighter than stainless steel, Breitling’s ultra- lightweight Endurance Pro may have been designed with triathlon athletes in mind, but it’s a stylish and sporty chronograph perfect for mastering every day.

The Endurance Pro’s rubber strap and 100 m of water resistance ensures that it’s capable of withstanding rugged underwater and challenging land environments. Powered by Breitling’s COSC-certified SuperQuartz™ caliber 82, the movement provides unmatched accuracy. Other features include easy readability, a timekeeping chronograph, and a solar compass to keep you on track and focused on the finish.

Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols – Eternal flow: cloisonné enamelling and engraving

Métiers d’Art: Tribute to traditional symbols

Vacheron Constantin pays tribute to ancient Chinese culture with its new Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols series, featuring two
interpretations of the “Seawater Cliff”, a legendary Chinese motif that first appeared in the 14th century. This depiction of wave-lashed cliffs belongs to the cultural tradition of Imperial China, a special field of study for Mr. Song, the Former Associate Research Librarian of the Palace Museum, who guided the Vacheron Constantin artisans on this project. Housed in a 38 mm- diameter case in 18K pink or white gold, powered by Calibre 2460 driving central hours and minutes hands, these dials provide a forceful, beautiful expression of Chinese cultural symbolism.

  • A series of four limited-edition watches, created in close collaboration with the Former Associate Research Librarian of Palace
Museum housed in Beijing’s Forbidden City.
  • A cultural tribute with the representation of the “Seawater Cliff” motif, a decorative symbol specific to the imperial court of the Ming
    and Qing dynasties.
  •  The creative expression of the Maison’s profound attachment to the world of artistic crafts and culture through its master artisans.

A fruitful cultural collaboration

The Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols series offers a journey into the history and culture of China’s last two Imperial dynasties, from the 14th to the early 20th centuries. To immerse itself in the distinctive decor of this period, the Maison took a particular interest in the decorative arts and notably in the “Seawater Cliff” motif omnipresent on courtly architectural elements, but also on furniture and porcelain, as well as on imperial clothing and particularly the so-called ‘dragon’ robes. These richly embroidered silk ceremonial garments conveyed distinctive symbolism according to their motifs.

For this research work, the Maison benefited from the advice of Mr. Song, the Former Associate Research Librarian of Palace Museum housed in Beijing’s Forbidden City.

In agreement with this expert in Chinese history and symbolism, studies on the dials of the four Métiers d’Art limited editions focused on the “Seawater Cliff” motif. Extensively documented by Mr. Song, this depiction features a mountain towering above the tides with their ebb and flow lashing its cliffs. Embroidered on the lower hem and cuffs of the robe, this ornamentation was regarded as auspicious for those who wore it.

A cultural tribute

Although water and mountains inspired the decoration of various artefacts in China as early as the Neolithic period – and were represented in an increasingly figurative way throughout the first millennium AD – the combination of the two came later. It was with the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties that the motif really took shape. Officially named “Seawater Cliff” under Emperor Wanli (1573-1620), it was reserved for the Imperial family. As its name suggests, this motif refers to the sea, its tides represented by long undulating lines that come crashing down in powerful surges against the cliff.

Symbolising the emperor’s immutability faced with the vagaries of life, these overhanging mountain cliffs are unaffected by the waves.

In Chinese, the words ‘tide’ and ‘dynasty’ are homonyms, while the word ‘cliff’ can also mean ‘ginger buds’ – of which one can recognise  the outline on the edge of this escarpment overlooking the sea. In Chinese tradition, water and mountains are also strong territorial symbols. With this “Seawater Cliff” motif richly emblazoned on his ceremonial robes the emperor embodied stability. Like the unshakeable cliff above the waves, a symbol of peace and longevity, he was the guarantor of the country’s fortune and prosperity. This motif became very popular and spread across all social classes in furniture, sculpture, decorative objects and architecture.

An ode to craftsmanship

Beating at the heart of the 38 mm-diameter case in 18K pink and white gold is in-house Calibre 2460, chosen for its aesthetic appeal and compact dimensions (26.2 mm in diameter and 3.60 mm thick). The movement’s configuration driving central hands ensures seamless integration with the dial to give scope and depth to the passing hours and minutes. Endowed with a 40-hour power reserve, it meets all the criteria of the Hallmark of Geneva certifying both origin and horological expertise. The 22K gold rotor echoes the symbolism of the dial, since the oscillating weight is delicately engraved with a motif recalling the movement of waves and tides.

Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols – Eternal flow: cloisonné enamelling and engraving

Against a star-studded night sky, the mountain peaks, bordered by vegetation in the shape of ginger buds, are caressed by tidal waves. With its colourful aesthetic and respect for traditional Chinese ornamentation, this depiction is a masterpiece of cloisonné enamelling, which was originated in China. The technique is also named Jingtai Blue , which pays tribute to its heyday which is in the era of Emperor Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty. The latter technique was a natural choice because of the flexibility it offers in terms of both the choice of colours and the graphic design of the intricate shapes.

Laying the 220 gold wires used to delineate the enamelling fields forming the “Seawater Cliff” motif along requires more than 50 hours of work to shape the motif. This is followed by the enamelling itself in successive layers according to colour and intensity, with a kiln firing between each operation. It takes no less than 70 hours to achieve the rich tones that are so characteristic of this piece. A final polish then completes the work to highlight the gold cloisonné that gives substance to the motif. Finally, a translucent enamel coating instils a unique glow into this highly architectural composition, enhanced by the finesse of the lines and ancestral expertise.

To highlight this enamelling work, the bezel of the model is entirely hand-engraved with a bat motif. In Chinese, ‘bat’ and ‘happiness’ have similar pronunciations – which goes some way to explaining the status of this animal as a harbinger of good fortune. In Chinese decoration, five bats are often seen together, traditionally expressing the “Five Good Fortunes”: longevity, wealth, stability, virtue and happiness. On this watch, the engraver has depicted the bat in the form of a frieze composed of successive volutes representing the animal’s characteristic silhouette.

Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols – Moonlight slivers: Grand Feu enameling, engraving and gemsetting

For this second “Seawater Cliff” motif, the aim was to achieve a depth effect on a monochrome base. Crafted in 18K white or pink gold depending on the model, the all-in-one-piece dial features hollowed waves, blue enamelled parts and raised diamond-set sections for the mountain area. The master artisan has used a blend of techniques to create this composition, endowing the motif with a subtle yet distinctive aesthetic.

The gold dial is divided into three parts. The first, which delineates the sea, is made of deep-blue Grand Feu enamel applied in successive kiln-fired layers. This is followed by patient engraving. The technique used for this depiction of waves is engraving on enamel to create volutes. These are then accentuated by the master artisan, who fills in the furrows with white enamel that is then also fired. This extremely thin layer creates a subtle shadow on a delicately textured background, creating the impression of a sea in motion.

The second part, devoted to the sea tides running along the mountain range, is reserved for the setting. Each sea tide is delicately hand-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, evoking the moon slivers that inspired the name of this piece. Meanwhile, the third part of the dial serves to add relief, with a mountain range lashed by foaming waves. Meticulously engraved with tone-on-tone champlevé enamel inlays to accentuate the depth of the landscape, this portrayal of the mountains is also worked in drypoint to accentuate the perspective effect.

The sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the sea tides exude an ashen moonlight gleam, echoed by the setting of the bezel entirely adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds.

Interview with Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director

How did you come up with the “Seawater Cliff” motif?

The Vacheron Constantin design department wanted to explore traditional Chinese symbolism for this new Métiers d’Art series. The aim was to complement the existing offer often found on watch dials celebrating Chinese New Year. In the course of this research, it became clear that the decoration of ancient imperial palaces and the court’s ceremonial robes offered some interesting avenues to explore, as confirmed by the contacts established with Mr. Song. This former researcher and scholar at the Palace Museum in Beijing is a specialist in Chinese symbolism. He visited the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin in Geneva to provide the Maison’s teams with valuable input. It was during these exchanges that the “Seawater Cliff” motif came to the fore. Mr. Song provided the necessary documentation and sound advice for the Maison to interpret this motif in two different ways. While each has its own character, they both share a common symbolism.

What determined the choice of artistic crafts?

The “Seawater Cliff” motif, as seen in Imperial architecture and ceremonial robes, is graphically very strong and richly coloured. This motif features a composition of sinuous lines for the tides, interwoven volutes for the waves lashing the cliffs and vertical structures for the mountain range above. This meant calling upon techniques capable of transcribing both the vast chromatic palette of this decoration and all its complexity. For the first Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols – Eternal flow timepiece, the cloisonné enamel technique, which originated in China, was the natural choice due to the flexibility it affords in the choice of colours and the graphic creation of highly elaborate shapes. For the dial of the Métiers d’Art – Tribute to traditional symbols – Moonlight slivers watch, the aim was to achieve a depth effect on a monochrome base. Engraving is the only way to achieve this kind of result, with recessed enamelled and gemset parts and others in relief to accentuate the 3D effect, which is achieved here using a ‘flat wash’ uniform layer of paint in a single colour.

Vacheron Constantin’s Métiers d’Art series often draw inspiration from history and ancient civilisations, as is the case with this new series. Is there any particular reason behind this?

As Vacheron Constantin explains, these Métiers d’Art series celebrate decorative techniques applied to watchmaking and jewellery, while inspired by art, history and culture. The interesting thing about history is that ancient civilisations reached an extreme level of sophistication in decorative techniques. Often, some of these techniques have even gradually vanished with the industrialisation and digitalisation of our societies. It’s up to a Maison like Vacheron Constantin, which is strongly committed to preserving artistic craftsmanship, to highlight these techniques by drawing inspiration from the most accomplished creations in this field. In the case of this Tribute to traditional symbols series, the main focus was on embroidery work. By reproducing these ancient motifs on a watch dial, the Maison’s teams and artisans are obliged to demonstrate creativity in order to preserve the spirit of the motifs, while at the same time shining a spotlight on these incredibly rich Imperial garments, symbols of a key period in Chinese history.

TAG HEUER CARRERA CHRONOGRAPH SEAFARER x HODINKEE

Hodinkee, the leading destination for all things watches and horology, has partnered with luxury watch manufacturer TAG Heuer for their third collaboration. Together, they announce the launch of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee.

The past collaborations with TAG Heuer, the Carrera Skipper and Carrera Dato, were homages to the history of TAG Heuer. With each of those collaborations, Hodinkee didn’t set out to reproduce the original, but rather to move it forward. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee is no different, designed as a revival of the iconic Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, which Heuer produced for the sporting goods retailer from the 1950s into the 1970s. A thoroughly modern Carrera, but updated for today’s adventures with the design ethos of one of Hodinkee’s very favorite and most notable vintage Heuer references. Maintaining the color codes and bezel aesthetic from the 1968 model, this collaboration thoroughly embraces the modern spirit of TAG Heuer. The Seafarer is a legendary watch with roots in the mid-century and is a reference that is reminiscent of a playful and sun-soaked era in watchmaking—one in which watches were being put to the test, worn hard, and often designed and used for specific pursuits. The Seafarer evokes images of the sea, the sand, and the sun and brings to mind the name Abercrombie & Fitch.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee is a modern, robust, and exciting interpretation of a favorite Seafarer reference. The Hodinkee Limited Edition now resides in the 42mm Carrera “Glassbox” case. The domed sapphire crystal allows for the profile of a vintage plexiglass crystal while being significantly more durable and clearer – both critical factors while out on the water. True to the color codes of the original, the black opaline dial is accented by shades of both sky and royal blue across the Regatta and Tide subdials. As the Carrera is a bezel-less case, the watch has maintained the original’s aesthetic by moving the bezel inside the rehaut in a matching black opaline.

Looking a bit closer, the Seafarer logo was relocated to the sub-register at 6, leveraging a Carrera font inspired by the late reference’s characterful blocky type. The brands kept the feeling of the late Reference 2446C Seafarer but made a conscious decision to look to the future of TAG Heuer with the present-day TAG Heuer and Carrera logos at 12 o’clock. Consistent with all models of the heritage Seafarer, the usual date window from the Carreras you see today was also removed, and the watch is fitted to a black textured rubber strap, making it fit for life at sea.
This watch is truly the embodiment of everything to love about TAG Heuer – past and present. In celebration of 1968, when Heuer introduced the

Reference 2446C Seafarer, Hodinkee produced 968 pieces of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee. As with the last two Hodinkee x TAG Heuer collaborations, 125 pieces will be sold by Hodinkee in the Hodinkee Shop. The remaining pieces will be available via TAG Heuer at boutiques and retailers worldwide. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee will retail for $7,950.

“The story of the Seafarer captures so much that makes watchmaking exciting: technical innovation, design, collaboration, and a chance to understand how business was conducted in the mid-20th century,” said Nicholas Biebuyck, Heritage Director at TAG Heuer. “America was the key market during the period and thanks to the friendship between Walter Haynes, President of Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Heuer family, not only did this great innovation come into the world, but it helped Heuer build its incredible reputation for timekeeping excellence in a region that would become vital to its future. Given that it was a US retailer who launched the Seafarer originally, it made perfect sense to debut this piece
with our great friends at Hodinkee for our limited edition together.”

“TAG Heuer is one of Hodinkee’s first partners, and we don’t take that lightly,” said Jeff Hilliard, Sr. Director of Limited Editions at Hodinkee. “For our third Limited Edition collaboration with them, we wanted to do something special. But when we asked them to bring back the tide complication, we figured it was a longshot, since we knew there would be significant research and development that was involved. To our surprise, they agreed to the concept, and we are super excited to bring a piece of TAG Heuer’s incredible history back to the forefront using the incredible glassbox chronograph.”

Celebrating the Legacy of Enheduanna with Montblanc’s Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton

Montblanc is honouring the 100th anniversary of its Meisterstück writing instrument with a remarkable tribute to Enheduanna, the world’s earliest known author, through the new Montblanc Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Skeleton. This extraordinary timepiece encapsulates the historical significance of writing and its evolution from ancient Mesopotamia.

The Dawn of Writing: Cuneiform Script

The earliest known writing system, the cuneiform script, originated in Mesopotamia around 3200 B.C.E. Developed by the Sumerians, it involved pressing a reed stylus into damp clay tablets to create wedge-shaped symbols. Over its 3000-year history, Cuneiform was used to document various languages, covering topics from temple activities and business transactions to myths, epics, and personal correspondence.

Enheduanna: The First Known Author

Enheduanna, a high priestess who lived around 2300 B.C.E., was the daughter of Sargon of Akkad, the founder of the Akkadian Empire. Appointed as the high priestess of the moon god Nanna in Ur, she wrote religious hymns and poetry dedicated to the goddess Inanna. Her works are the earliest examples of first-person writing, and she is believed to be the first author to claim authorship of her texts. Among her notable works is “The Exaltation of Inanna,” a poignant poem written during her exile that became a staple in scribal schools for centuries.

A Centennial Celebration with Montblanc

To mark the centenary of the Meisterstück, Montblanc collaborated with Catherine Mittermayer, Professor of Mesopotamian Studies at the University of Geneva, to create a tribute to Enheduanna. The result is the Limited Edition Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Skeleton, a timepiece that reflects the artistry and historical context of Enheduanna’s era.

A Timepiece Rich in Historical Detail

This limited edition watch, restricted to just 10 pieces, features a 44.80mm, 18-karat yellow gold case with an onyx dial engraved with an extract from Enheduanna’s Temple Hymns. The Montblanc name is rendered in Sumerian symbols, incorporating the words for “white” and “mountain.”
The 18-karat yellow gold case band bears the closing words of the hymn, attributing the text to Enheduanna: “The compiler of the tablets was Enheduanna. My king, something has been created that no one has created before.” An engraving of Enheduanna herself sits below the off-centred dial, positioned above the Exo-Tourbillon, with the crescent moon symbolizing her association with the moon god Nanna.

Additional historical elements include a depiction of the Royal Game of Ur behind a bull representation, engravings of Sumerian numbers, and the number 10 signifying the limited edition. These details create a rich tapestry of Mesopotamian culture and history.

The Exo-Tourbillon Movement

Montblanc’s master watchmakers in Villeret spent three years developing the patented Suspended Exo Tourbillon complication. This innovation positions the large balance wheel outside the tourbillon’s rotating cage, making it more visible and enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The unique architecture of the Exo Tourbillon saves energy, as the cage is lighter without the balance wheel, ensuring superior performance.

The hand-wound Manufacture German silver skeleton movement, calibre MB M16.69, is decorated in Villeret and features an anthracite ruthenium treatment, blending historical and contemporary elements.

Displaying the Montblanc Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton Enheduanna

Each of the 10 pieces comes in a special presentation case modelled after the Great Ziggurat of Ur. The exterior, covered in stone, is etched with extracts from Enheduanna’s Temple Hymns. The case can be used as a display stand, allowing the owner to showcase the watch in their home or office.

A Tribute to Writing and Art

The Montblanc Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton Enheduanna celebrates the written word’s history and its profound connection to Montblanc. This limited-edition timepiece pays homage to Enheduanna, the pioneering woman who elevated writing to an art form, and serves as a fitting tribute for the 100th anniversary of the Meisterstück.
